The name Nocturne (meaning of the night) was originally an ensemble piece in the 18th century in several movements used for for evening parties. Later In the 19thc it's one movement form, it was adopted by John Field and later popularised by Chopin. It generally has a tranquil lyrical melody and is very romantic and expressive. I have tried to keep these elements in this Nocturne. Written here for Violin Duet and Piano, the parts are equally divided. Highest note top F sharp, violin 1 (once). Bowing has been left to the performer. It is written in the key of concert B minor it has a very gentle opening with harmonies evolving around a cycle of 5th's in places. The piece has three definite sections- the lyrical melody to begin with, a middle section building to a climax before a return to the 1st section. This is followed by a transitional contrasting section (poco piu mosso) wandering through a few keys to settle on an inner pedal tonic note chime. Gentle chords restore the opening once more- this opening theme climaxes towards the end and a gentle reflection of the opening bars concludes the piece.It is 4 mins 20 in length and price is for the full score and parts.I have set it to intermediate level, but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Serenity is as the title suggests, is a peaceful and relaxing composition with a sense of openness and space.It is a fusion of two styles-namely the late romantic period and film music. It is based on a single idea heard in the first two bars (a bar or so of quaver movement). This gets developed throughout the piece even changing key for a few bars at one point for a twist of harmonic interest before reaching a climax in the middle. After several more bars of an idea expressed earlier, the piece returns to the main theme for the last time featuring a small codetta before fading away gently to a whisper. The whole score is on here for you to assess suitability. It is set to intermediate level and is around 4min 40 in length. Led by not just one violin but two, the roles of leading voice and accompaniment constantly switch between the three instruments.All three movements feature two strongly contrasting themes and each of the three approaches the themes' development in a unique way.The first movement's tension resolves in a kind of anti-climax, a moment of greatest fragility after the built-up tension, which then returns to a (almost) note-perfect reprise of the exposition, to show that in the end nothing has changed.The second movement even intensifies the struggle between the two themes, with ultimately one of them taking over.In the third movement, an energetic waltz, no effort is even made to unify it's two themes, they just stand block-like against each other.

Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood. Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Grá has a performance time of a little over three minutes.
