æ„›(Ai, Japanese for Love), is a beautiful original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Violins, and is one of series of pieces celebrating Love in different languages around the world.

Expressive throughout, be sure to pay attention to contrasts in dynamics and articulation. æ„›(Ai) has a performance time of around two minutes and a half minutes. Composed by Traditional. Arranged by David McKeown. Jewish,Multicultural,Wedding,World. 4 pages. David McKeown #6078955. Published by David McKeown (A0.589563).

Odessa Bulgar is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violins.

For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations.

Odessa Bulgar is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Odessa Bulgar is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Odessa Bulgar is perfect for weddings, celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. Click the link above to listen to a full Youtube performance of the Clarinet version of this duet.

Composed by Grant Horsley. Classical,Contest,Festival,Film/TV,Folk,Halloween. 28 pages. Grant Horsley #1044680. Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1466077).

A Piano Backing Track is also available. There are also other instrumental versions of this piece including Flute and Clarinet Choirs.

Midnight Carousel is in the deep rich key of D minor to aid to the After Dark mood and mystery The piece has two distinct ideas.

After the introduction a Circus- type Waltz begins, when this is repeated it has a very haunting counter melody which is both lilting and lyrical. As the piece develops, an out of character playful Scherzo theme begins which adds some intensity and mystery surrounding the Midnight Carousel. Both Waltz and Scherzo themes exchange dialogue throughout this section as if wanting some sort of control, when suddenly two accents appear to signify a halt We then return to the opening theme once more to lead us to a finish.
Before the conclusion however, the Scherzo theme re-instates it's ideas before the final bars!

The whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability- It has been set to intermediate level as the range is around 2 octaves with some parts less than this. Bowing has been left to the performer.
Mainly Quarter and Eighth notes used throughout- therefore it would be appropriate for some early-intermediate players. It is around 3 mins 30 long Ideal for concerts, contests, productions, halloween, folklore/fantasy themes or simply something different to add to the repertoire

Price is for the score and parts.

Horsey Horsey is a comedy song arranged by David McKeown as a duet for two Violins.

Paddy Roberts was a South African musician who flew in the RAF during the Second World War, then later as a commercial airline pilot. His music career finally got off the ground in the mid ‘50s. Ralph Butler was a well-known comedy lyricist of the time, responsible also for The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Nellie The Elephant and Run Rabbit, Run among others. Nowadays Horsey Horsey is best known as a nursery rhyme.

This duet version of Horsey Horsey is a fun Theme and Variations, with the melody presented in swing style, in a slow minor key version, in 6/8 and in a nineteenth century style grand finale. Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann 1681-1767. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. 31 pages. Jmsgu3 #6327363. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552333).

I. Largo II. Allegro III. Affettuoso IV. Vivace

Georg Philipp Telemann's Sonatas Op. 2, also known as the Six Sonatas for two flutes (or violins), are significant for several reasons. First, they are dedicated to two young music lovers, explicitly appealing to a circle of pupils and music enthusiasts. The pieces foster the ability of musical expression and are characterized by a combination of expansive baroque thematic material and charming galant features in the slow and fast movements, respectively. Telemann was considered one of the leading German composers of his time, and his works, including the Sonatas Op. 2, reflect his significant contribution to the Baroque music era. The Methodical nature of these sonatas, as described when they were published in 1732, is also noteworthy, as they included a second, ornamented version of the simple melodies, showcasing Telemann's innovative approach to composition.

Furthermore, Telemann's music, which incorporates French, Italian, and German national styles, remained highly regarded by colleagues and critics alike during his lifetime and the latter half of the 18th century. Numerous theorists and prominent composers cited his works as models, and he influenced pupils of J.S. Bach in Leipzig, such as Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Therefore, Telemann's Sonatas Op. 2 contributed to the expansion of domestic music-making and influenced other composers and musicians of his time and beyond.

By John Winstead and Miguel Angel Cotignola. By Juan María Solare. 20th Century,Celtic,Instructional,Irish. 5 pages. Juan Maria Solare #6208589. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.596615).

Highlands

for two violins

About the genesis of my work Highlands: There was a composition competition in Scotland (The Gordon Stewart Memorial Competition), they asked to write a short march for Scottish bagpipes. I said to myself: I don't know anything about the bagpipes, this could be an opportunity to get to know the instrument better.

So I began to investigate and discovered that there is a huge literature, many works. Of course: all the works are impressively similar, because it is a relatively limited instrument (with forgiveness of the pipers). But this is an unimportant detail for our story. So, with a collection of bagpipe sheet music at hand, I began to investigate the possibilities of the instrument.

And I made a huge mistake: Bagpipe scores are written without accidentals, but they are actually in A major. Sharps are not written simply because there is NO alternative. They can't play anything else (at least the traditional bagpipes), so the sheet music ommits the superfluous sharps. In short: then I composed my melody for that contest in A minor ... which is impossible to play on bagpipes. The fact of having written the melody on board a train prevented me from listening to dozens of works for bagpipes as a reference (at that time - June 2015 - I did not have a mobile internet connection).

When I realized the mistake (in time) I rewrote that melody in major mode (well, Mixolydian ...), added some typical bagpipe ornamentation and retitled it: Ballone Castle (the name of the castle of the organizers of the contest, the Stewart Society).

And now what do I do with the original melody, in minor mode? Instead of throwing it away (which I never do) I titled it Highlands, and it is the work that you are about to hear, or whose score you are holding.

I didn't win that contest in Scotland. But I recorded Ballone Castle and posted it on Spotify:
Ballone Castle (for bagpipes) - on Spotify (there is a version with drums and another without them).

As for Highlands, the saxophone version was recorded by my Chinese friend Yu Han for the album Images of Elsewhere (Images of Elsewhere (saxophone)). In this case, there are also two versions: solo saxophone and sax with electronic sounds. The electronic sounds here actually simulate the typical bagpipe pedal (drone) note. A version of Highands for oboe Solo was recorded by John Winstead (Highlands (oboe solo))

Comparing both pieces (Highlands and Ballone Castle) it is verified how the simple change of mode (major / minor), in addition to the change of instrument, can work wonders for musical perception. They are two related but independent works, each with its own defined character - like two twins.

But the story continues. In October 2020 I began an intense dialogue with the violinist Miguel Ãngel Cotignola, from Mendoza (Argentina). I suggested him to film Highlands. He suggestd me to write a second violin part. I did it. He filmed it on the shore of Lake Potrerillos, in Mendoza (Argentina). This video can be seen here: Highlands (for two violins)
