The origins of When the Saints Go Marching In are unclear, though it was first recorded in 1923. A later instrumental recording by Louis Armstrong affirmed the song’s status as a jazz standard and created an ongoing association with the city of  New Orleans. When I’m Sixty-Four first appeared on the Beatles’ 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Despite the song’s appearance relatively late in the Beatles’ discography, it was one of the first songs that Paul McCartney wrote, at the age of 16. When the song was finally recorded in 1966, Paul McCartney felt it was too slow and turgid. George Martin simply solved the problem by speeding up the tape and raising the pitch by one semitone. 

This version of When I’m Sixty-Four is arranged as a duet for two Violins. The full YouTube performance above is the Clarinet version of this duet.

Musicians at an intermediate level will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performance. The overall performance time is around two and a half minutes.

When you think about it, it’s obvious why Scott is scatterbrained, seeing as there’s nothing to stop his brain falling out. His friends also called him scatterlunged and scatterspleened. He’s a happy chap, not a deep thinker of course, but he always has a smile for everyone.

Scott the Scatterbrained Skeleton is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. The main melody is staccato, with a more lyrical and sustained middle section. This duet is both fun to play and a great, simple exercise for learning to shift from first to third position.

The most important thing in this duet is to play in tune. When you play a note with the third finger in first position, then play the same note with the first finger in third position, make sure they are exactly the same pitch!

Playing the duet with a partner helps.
