Négysey's Gallery (2001) for two violins is based on computer paintings created by the violin virtuoso János Négysey. During a return visit to my Alma Mater, the University of California, San Diego I heard the sounds of a far-off violin and followed them, finding myself in front of the door of János Négysey, the violin professor at the university. We hadn't seen each other in over 20 years. While catching up on our lives since my graduation, János took out several stunning computer paintings he had recently completed. I immediately suggested that I do a new work for two violins based on his art. I asked to see more and soon when I left his office I had a collection of paintings from which to choose. A year later the piece was completed and he programmed it for a recital at the University. They were premiered on April 10, 2001 by János and Päivikki Nykter, also a virtuoso violinist. The images were projected on several screens across the width of the stage. Afterwards, János and I would meet on Skype to keep up to date and there was always a healthy amount of laughter. When he passed away suddenly in 2013 I was shocked and saddened. I still miss his insights, sense of humor and encyclopedic knowledge. The duration is approximately 33 minutes and there are 12 color paintings included with the score. This arrangement has been made simpler by turning it into 3/4 time instead of 12/8- Moving the key signature from E flat to F major. Both instrumental parts are reasonably equal in terms of range (2 octaves) and detail and bowing is left to the performer. I've tried to keep the piano part light and simple for support. The fast melisma type runs in the original have been taken out, and although I have included mordents and trills, these can be optional.I have set it to early intermediate, but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. The piano part is 5 pages, instrumental parts 2- and it is 4 mins 30 in length. This arrangement is made based on the original 1994 recording, however, with some unique features: 1. The arrangement starts by introducing each instrument one by one, from the piano (the music box intro), 1st violins, then 2nd violins, then all instruments. 2. Arpeggiated running notes on the piano part up to B6 (on the bridge), which is a place to show off. 3. A repeated end of the last chorus before the outro, where the 2nd and 3rd repetition gets more and more virtuosic as it gets more intense, another place to show off for the violins (the pianist also plays arpeggiated running notes). 4. High notes up to B6 (on the outro) for the violins, and natural harmonics on some notes (i.e. on E6). This arrangement is challenging, fast-paced (slow practice is recommended), both for the pianist and violinists, but it's fun :D Notation features: 1. Some fingerings on the piano are added. This fingering is based on my own performance in a recital, however, feel free to use your own. 2. Rehearsal marks start from the verse intro (bar 13), which is marked, for example, A-I, where this refers to the small intro before letter A. This applies to B onwards.
