Initially based on a song inspired by the poem L'Aube dans la Chambre by Supervielle, as translated by S N Solomons, and a related poem by E M Solomons, these instrumental versions of Dawn in the Room represent the feelings of gentle nostalgia, regret and hope of all three poems. The piece is presented with various melody instruments (flute, clarinet, cor anglais, bassoon or cello) and with various accompaniments (guitar, strings or piano). Guinnevere is a song written by David Crosby in 1968. The song is notable for its serene yet pointed melody and its unique lyrics, which compare Queen Guinevere to the object of the singer's affection, referred to as mi'lady. In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. I have arranged the song in standard tuning as re-tuning your guitar can be very time consuming. In order to do this successfully I have made some changes to the original accompaniment, nothing drastic and the feel of the guitar part is still the same. The version for trio (guitar and two flutes) is taken from the various live performances and has an extended structure compared to the original song. The harmony has a deliberate mediaeval feel to it in keeping with the atmosphere of the song. You could use any two instruments for this, on the recording I made of this arrangement Ā for the album The Great Music Of Crosby Stills Nash And Young (2021) I used guitars for everything.

LOCAL HERO - WILD THEME - FLUTE and GUITAR DUET

Suits Classical, Acoustic or Electric Guitar
Derek Hasted writes Rightly described as an astonishingly beautiful piece, this music from the film Local Hero actually features twice on the soundtrack album, in different keys with different solo instruments.

My arrangement for flute and classical guitar exploits the sustain of the flute and the soft tones of Ā nylon strings and works well at a slightly more modest pace compared to the original. Iā€™ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. My arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopflerā€™s quasi-improvised variations on the tune.Ā 

There are no dynamics, but the changing texture of the accompaniment creates the illusion of dynamic changes and you are welcome to add phrasing and dynamics to make the performance ā€œyoursā€.

The guitar part is a little challenging at speed but this will suit confident intermediate players.

This enjoyable concert item has a wonderfully captivating melody that the audience will be humming all the way home...

DEVIL'S GALOP (Dick Barton Theme Tune) - FLUTE and GUITAR
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This evocative tune was the theme music to Dick Barton Special Agent, a radio drama on the BBC many decades ago.

The music is full of tension, with rising chromatic chords and long chromatic scale passages creating a constant restless feel.

The guitar accompaniment is fingered, as thereā€™s really only one place on the guitar to play the chords. For the tune, add slurs wherever these improve the flow of the music.

Here and there, I have deliberately ā€œrespelledā€ some of the accidentals in a way that hopefully improves overall readability, and sometimes the two parts have two representations of the same note at the same time.

A version of this was played by the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra who also managed to find time to mop their brows in the occasional pauses in the action. I also have a guitar duet arrangement on sale where the tune and accompaniment roles switch back and forth - find it using my website below.

WHERE IS LOVE (from Oliver) - FLUTE and GUITAR DUET

Derek Hasted writes This charming song, from the Stage Show Oliver, fits beautifully onto Flute and Guitar. The sustain of the Flute mimics the little Oliver's plaintive voice, and the guitar provides a gentle movement that fits underneath, with some of the accompaniment echoing the tune one measure later.

Played at a slow tempo to match the original, this is an easy-to-play and delightfully haunting piece, ideal both for school concerts and adult performances. This is one of a growing range of flute and guitar titles that I am arranging and each one is carefully chosen to make the very best of the two instruments while keeping the complexity down, so that the piece is accessible to more musicians!

My arrangement for flute and guitar includes all the verses and the instrumental break, wrapped up in an accessible arrangement that feels comfortable for both players. The guitar part is intermediate, the flute part is very slightly easier.

I have included some fingering for the guitar part so that itā€™s clear which positions are used, and there are skeleton dynamics that reflect the different textures in the accompaniment. Please feel free to add more to make the performance yours.
