SAMAN - accessible gentle piece for FLUTE & GUITAR

Intended for classical guitar, though sometimes it gets listed erroneously under electric guitar.

Derek Hasted writes Composed for piano in the key of 3 flats, this gentle piece has a timeless, ethereal sound.

There are a handful of arrangements for guitar using a Capo to recreate the original key, but it’s hard to recreate the spacious, effortless sound and pedal sustain of the piano.

My flute and guitar duet version places the piece in a different key, where the guitar breathes more easily, and adds a lot of depth to the flute part. The difficult guitar chords and stretches, the awkward sustains - they’ve all gone, and the result is an accessible duet that will delight audiences with its grace and smoothness.

The flute part occasionally reaches top E (3 ledger lines up) and it’s important not to be shrill here, as the flute will carry over the guitar at even a modest volume.

There are no dynamics, but somehow the piece seems to know how it needs to be played...

Opening in the same key as the original (C major), my version includes guitar-friendly key-changes at the same points as the original, but avoiding the key of 5 flats!(If you play the D major guitar accompaniment using barrés and no open strings, then you’ll find the E major section has identical fingering).

DEVIL'S GALOP (Dick Barton Theme Tune) - FLUTE and GUITAR
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This evocative tune was the theme music to Dick Barton Special Agent, a radio drama on the BBC many decades ago.

The music is full of tension, with rising chromatic chords and long chromatic scale passages creating a constant restless feel.

The guitar accompaniment is fingered, as there’s really only one place on the guitar to play the chords. For the tune, add slurs wherever these improve the flow of the music.

Here and there, I have deliberately “respelled†some of the accidentals in a way that hopefully improves overall readability, and sometimes the two parts have two representations of the same note at the same time.

A version of this was played by the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra who also managed to find time to mop their brows in the occasional pauses in the action. I also have a guitar duet arrangement on sale where the tune and accompaniment roles switch back and forth - find it using my website below.

Set in the same key as Cyndi Lauper’s original, everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based on the gentle simplicity found in her official video.

The music rises and falls, making the dynamics happen almost automatically, and yet there are plenty of opportunities in the phrasing for a relaxed duo to make this piece absolutely magical.
