The Big Rock Candy Mountain is an all time favorite folk tune that can be dated back to the 1890s. It was recorded in 1928 by Harry McClintock and popularized in the 1930s by Woody Guthrie and again in the 1960s by Pete Seeger. Over the years, the words, originally bawdy, changed to fit the times and audiences, but always remained true to the hobo's dream of paradise.  This arrangement (without lyrics) is for an Intermediate String trio (two violins and cello). This is a Classic Rag written by Scott Joplin in 1902. It was a time of silent movies and player-pianos. Yes, the song was popular in its time, but it wasn't until 1974 when the tune was used in the movie The Sting that it became a sensation. The cello sustains the rhythmic beat with its standard bass line.
