The courante in its essence is a ballroom dance, and this particular dance is one of repression. Despite its lively rhythms and leaping melodies, there is a glow of heartache that still manages to shine through. Still, the dance dances on, as a proud knight would before the night of battle, knowing that tomorrow morning they might be forever bidding adieu to their loved ones.The difficulty for this movement, as with many others, comes in terms of the leftover third voice when arranging from the original two. I have written for the extra voice, in this case the second violin, to support the first violin rhythmically, and join the cello with providing harmonic information.
