Songs of Slaves is a medley of nine African-American spirituals that were born during the time Africans were enslaved in the Americas.  These tunes are inter-mingled in a highly emotional and beautiful arrangement for early intermediate string trio (Violin 1, Violin 2, and Cello).  All parts contain multiple solos. The spirituals are: Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen, Lord I Want to Be a Christian, Steal Away, Were You There?, Go Down, Moses, O Mary Don't You Weep, The Gospel Train, Twelve Gates to the City, and Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Especially appropriate for Black History Month, his file contains the score as well as separate parts (20 pages).

Ezekiel Saw de Wheel is a well-known African American Spiritual that refers to an Old Testament story about the prophet Ezekiel. The tune has been recorded by numerous artists including Woody Guthrie, Paul Robeson, John Lee Hooker, the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Tillers, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, The Charioteers, and Gold City.
This arrangement is for an Intermediate String Trio (two violins and cello) and it imitates a rolling wheel taking the melody into key and rhythm changes.

This song originally was a hymn written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900, to which his brother John Rosamund Johnson composed the music for the lyrics. The hymn was a prayer of thanksgiving to God for faithfulness and freedom. The image is one of going from slavery to freedom: as in the book of Exodus in the Bible, and also as African-American black slaves after the Civil War. The hymn has been featured in over 40 Christian Hymnals over the years. However, as of late, the popularity of the song has increased - and it is now often referred to as The Black National Anthem. This arrangement is true to the solemn majestical nature of the original hymn, and each of the 3 string instruments in the Trio gets a rotation at voicing the melody.
