CAROLAN'S CONCERTO is a popular tune played by Irish fiddlers and bands. Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) was a blind Irish harpist often considered to be Ireland's national composer. He was an itinerant musician who traveled throughout Ireland composing and performing his tunes. McIntire's arrangement is for a STRING ENSEMBLE (two violins and cello) of players at the INTERMEDIATE SKILL LEVEL in which all the players participate in a lively exchange of the melody and its variations. This package includes a score and separate sheet music for each instrument. This carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, when Herod ordered the killing of Jewish baby boys. It has a simple tune in a minor key using a Picardy Third which is the inclusion of the relative major chord in this case at the end of two phrases. Arranged as an INTERMEDIATE STRING TRIO (two violins and cello) in A minor, it provides a lovely carol for Christmas services and programs.
