We Wish You A Merry Christmas is an old English Christmas Carol which most likely dates back to the Eighteenth Century. Nonetheless, it is one of the most universally well-known of the traditional carols. As a Trio, we always like to end any of our holiday gig setlists with this finale. Without fail, it always seems to happen that someone/everyone usually joins in singing along as we close out the festivities!

Three iconic American Christmas carols arranged for two violins and a cello. Each instrument has a melody part which makes this arrangement appealing to performers. The march-like Go Tell It On The Mountain gives way to a gentle lullaby-like Away In A Manger, The cello pizz providing a gentle sense of rocking. The tempo picks up with Jingle Bells, leading to a slightly less predictable, but satisfying, final cadence. The performance duration is close to four and a half minutes and the full score has individual parts attached. Some phrasing has been suggested, but as always, use your discretion. This arrangement is well suited to high school string players and church music groups looking for new repertoire across the Christmas season. .

THE COVENTRY CAROL is an English Christmas carol and Christmas lullaby from the 16th century that was traditionally performed in Coventry, England. This carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, when Herod ordered the killing of Jewish baby boys. It has a simple tune in a minor key using a Picardy Third which is the inclusion of the relative major chord in this case at the end of two phrases. Arranged as an INTERMEDIATE STRING TRIO (two violins and cello) in A minor, it provides a lovely carol for Christmas services and programs. Separate sheets of music are provided for each instrument in addition to the score.

This is a 1951 Christmas Song by Meredith Wilson (of Music Man fame). This carol has been recorded by Bing Crosby, Perry Como, the Fontane Sisters and Michael Buble, but the version by Johnny Mathis on his 1986 Christmas album became an all-time Top 10 Christmas Hit. This song was also used recently in the 2004 film The Polar Express. Our Trio loves playing this arrangement because the 2nd Violin is featured with a stand-alone, stand-out countermelody. Oh, what fun!
