Its origin is uncertain, but it is said to have come from a 1662 Jesuit manuscript and it appeared in a Roman Catholic hymnbook in 1677. The tune has also been attributed to a Silesian folk song and the melody can be heard as The Crusader's March in an oratiorio by Franz Liszt.
