Several years ago, this song was the special request of a potential groom who was throwing a surprise birthday party for his girlfriend - with the intent of proposing to her during the party. He had hired our String Trio to provide the background music for the celebration, and specifically wanted to propse to her during the playing of this song. Hesitantly, I agreed to write an arrangement  of this song for String Trio - and much to my surprise and delight, the translation worked out rather well.  ...And she said, Yes!.

My first reaction was one of doubt as I pondered how I could make this divergent sound work for a String Trio. The more I listened, I heard the haunting melody, and the lyrics speaking of internal struggles and the need for introspection. Yes, caring can be very unsettling and at times even frightening. Relationships are complex. You have to invest emotionally. (...kind of like I had to do to pen this compostion for strings.) The arrangement is simple and straight-forward, but it works. After all, we often have to find comfort in unconventional choices. As the lyrics tell us: ...never got cold wearing nothing in the snow..

This charming arrangement for a trio of two violins and cello is accessible to intermediate students, amateurs and professionals. The rhythm is a little complex, but the left hand work is all in first position.

The film composer, Dario Marianelli, used several period pieces of music for scenes in the movie. This is a lively festive dance that was originally composed by Henry Purcell who lived in the 17th century. It soundsvery folk-like and it's possible he heard it being played by a band and decided to formally write it down.I took the original music and added a section to it that I composed which sounds stylistically right to give it a bit more length. This musicis great for wedding recessional or just if you want a lively background music piece for your reception or gig it is fun to play. I also did a string quartetarrangement and you will find that on SMP as well.

The result is eloquently altered - but still recognizable if you listen closely.  [In lieu of a Second Violin, that part can also be played on a trumpet (Trumpet in C).]  ENJOY!
