Smile Like You Mean It is a song by American rock band The Killers. It was co-written by their lead vocalist and their bassist in 2003. They claim that the song was written in just 8 minutes. (?!) Several years ago, this song was the special request of a potential groom who was throwing a surprise birthday party for his girlfriend - with the intent of proposing to her during the party. He had hired our String Trio to provide the background music for the celebration, and specifically wanted to propse to her during the playing of this song. Hesitantly, I agreed to write an arrangement  of this song for String Trio - and much to my surprise and delight, the translation worked out rather well.  ...And she said, Yes!.

John Lunn's music for the British historical drama Downton Abbey captures the pomp and ceremony of the British Royalty absolutely perfectly. There is both energy and emotion in the driving 6/8 rhythm. Lyrics to this music were added later by Don Black (of James Bond movie-theme fame) and Did I Make the Most of Loving You leaves fans a little choked-up when they read/hear the lyrics. All three instruments in this String Trio arrangement pass back-and-forth the lyrical theme, as well as the ostinato eighth-notes.
