*INSTRUMENTATION: 2 VIOLINS & CELLO*

New York, New York is really a song that needs no introduction! Written as the theme for the Martin Scorsese film of the same name in 1977, the song was originally performed by Liza Minnelli, and her version received a Golden Globe nomination that year. However, it didn't really become a mainstream hit until 1978, when Frank Sinatra included it in his performances at Radio City Music Hall; his version quickly became a massive success, and it's now considered one of his signature songs. To this day, it's still one of the best-known songs of all time about New York City, and it's been included in AFI's list of the top 100 songs in American cinema -- so you can't go wrong adding this one to your gig books! This Cellobat arrangement for your two-violin and cello trio features the soaring melodies, catchy big-band horn riffs, fun jazz harmonies, and feel-good vibe of the original for a chart your group will love to play...and you're sure to get your audience singing along, too! Rated advanced-intermediate for a few tricky rhythms and accidentals; this will be playable for more advanced students and sightreadable for professionals.

By John Lunn. By John Lunn. Arranged by Homco/Crinion. Celtic,Film/TV,Historic,Irish. 7 pages. Homco/Crinion #1037444. Published by Homco/Crinion (A0.1458497).

John Lunn's music for the British historical drama Downton Abbey captures the pomp and ceremony of the British Royalty absolutely perfectly. There is both energy and emotion in the driving 6/8 rhythm. Lyrics to this music were added later by Don Black (of James Bond movie-theme fame) and Did I Make the Most of Loving You leaves fans a little choked-up when they read/hear the lyrics. All three instruments in this String Trio arrangement pass back-and-forth the lyrical theme, as well as the ostinato eighth-notes.

By Lady Gaga. By Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, Natalie Hemby, and Stefani Germanotta. Arranged by Homco/Crinion. Contemporary,Film/TV,Pop. 4 pages. Homco/Crinion #1031063. Published by Homco/Crinion (A0.1451759).

In this StringTrio Arrangement, the Cello opens by playing Lady Gaga's haunting melody in its rich lower register. The cello then continues with the melody for the entire opening statement. (Cellists will love this moment in the limelight.) The melody is then passed on to the 1st Violin for the re-statment of the initial theme. After the bridge section, the Cello briefly reumes the lead, but then passes it on to the 2nd Violin, while all instruments diminish in volume for the final section. The last statement of the theme is eerily voiced in close harmony by all 3 instruments, before the 1st Violin breathlessly whispers the melody to a close.  Diminished chordal harmonies punctuate the fade-away ending.

By Elihu S. Conant-Haque. By Elihu S. Conant-Haque. Arranged by Elihu S. Conant-Haque. 21st Century,Chamber,Contemporary. 9 pages. E. S. Conant-Haque #975919. Published by E. S. Conant-Haque (A0.1392390).

Romance for Tuba & Strings is a short exposition of a simple theme for tuba accompanied by string trio. The beauty of this theme is in its seventh and ninth intervals, which the tubist and violinist are encouraged to emphasize. The body of the work is expressive and lyrical, and should be approached with musical sensitivity. The piece concludes with a sudden change of thematic material, becoming resolute and declarative. The players must make sure that this sudden development is conveyed decisively, and that the ending is powerful and majestic.
This piece is not technically demanding, but the tuba and violin parts cover wide ranges on their respective instruments, and as such advanced level is recommended.
