Three Impressions of Northern Arizona

for flute (or violin) and piano

 The three movements of this piece were composed in the summer of 2007 for Emily McKay, flute and Rita Borden, piano. I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

This arrangement is based on the original publication from William Walker's Southern Harmony where the music is basically a 3 voices choral and this arrangement is almost just a transcription to violin and piano. The melody has little changes as the way it is interpreted today but keeps almost the same harmony from the original. It is written in a straight easy way for players to enjoy. Although the title of the piece comes from the hymn written by John Newton this is only an instrumental arrangement. The PDF includes the piano score (two pages) and the violin part (one page).

This piece is for violin solo and piano.  A graceful melody based on the pentatonic scale, it recollects things from the past. In the middle, the music begins to be more agitated with several modulations.  As the music ends, it returns to the beginning theme with a violin and piano duet.  This piece is good for any kind of events to express personal's life.

Ukrainian National Anthem for Violin & Piano

The Ukrainian National Anthem is the national anthem of Ukraine. It was adopted in 2003 and is the official anthem of the country. The lyrics were written by Pavlo Chubynsky and the music was composed by Mykhailo Verbytsky.


The anthem is based on a poem written by Chubynsky in 1862, which tells of the struggles of the Ukrainian people throughout their history and their determination to remain a free and independent nation. The lyrics are considered to be a powerful expression of Ukrainian national identity and patriotism. The anthem has become a symbol of the Ukrainian people's strength and resilience in the face of adversity. The song is often sung at public events and gatherings in Ukraine, and it is a popular choice for choirs and orchestras to perform.

Lucijan Å kerjanc (1900-1973) was a Slovenian Composer.
Å kerjanc is one of the most important older composers of contemporary Slovene music and is one of the key Slovene musical personalities of the 20th century. He graduated in Ljubljana and studied music in Prague, Vienna (Joseph Marx), Paris (Schola cantorum) and Basel (Felix Weingartner).

He spent many years teaching composition at the Ljubljana Academy of Music, teaching composers such as Nada Ludvig-Pe�ar, Zvonimir Cigli� and Janez Mati�i� whilst serving as a chancellor for a period and was a pianist, conductor, music writer, and director of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra based in the country's capital.
His style reflected late romanticism with qualities of expressionism and impressionism in his pieces, often with a hyperbolic artistic temperament, juxtaposing the dark against melodic phrases in his music.
Å kerjanc was liberal in his attitude to music and multifaceted in his works. Whilst musically diverse, his opus centred on composition, varying from piano miniatures and solos for beginners, and solo and chamber works to full blown concertos and symphonies. Apart from sonatas, he notably composed a cycle of seven nocturnes, which many consider his greatest piano oriented work, and seven orchestral pieces Gazele (Ghazels). He not only composed for the piano but also the violin, the clarinet and the bassoon in 1952. During his life he also wrote for international composers and composed the film scores for a number of films under Yugoslavia.

In 2009 he was Artist-in-Residence at Duke University. In addition the USA and the UK, Oliveira's music has also been played in many countries, with invitations for concerts exclusively with his music in México, Italy and Holland (Amsterdam).  The Spanish Magazine Sonograma has published 2 interviews with Sergio.

Sergio is the founder and a member of the group of composers Prelúdio 21. The group is one of the most active worldwide. It holds a distinguished place in Brazilian contemporary music, having been active for 15 consecutive seasons, with a permanent series of monthly concerts since 2008. In 2011 the group released the CD String Quartets, with performances by the Quarteto Radamés Gnattali. Oliveira is also a member of the group of composers Vox Novus, based in New York.

To commemorate 15 years of activity as a composer, Oliveira released a box set with 4 CDs, as well as a CD with composer Mark Hagerty, and produced the series QUINZE, with 13 concerts including his works, between July and October of 2012.  More than 130 musicians, including 28 composers, participated of QUINZE (CDs and series).

His discography includes 14 CDs as producer, 14 as composer, 22 as general producer, 2 as arranger and 2 as pianist. His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra.  

Sergio Roberto de Oliveira is a member of the Latin Academy of the Arts and Science of Recording.

He died from pancreatic cancer in 2017.
