The Wind Trio for two Oboes and English Horn in C major, Op. 87 is a trio composition by Ludwig van Beethoven written in 1794, shortly after he arrived Vienna. Because amateur performers would gather in unusual permutations of players, this Trio was quickly arranged for many other combinations of instruments: versions exist for two violins and bass line, two flutes and viola, two clarinets and bassoon, as a sonata for violin and piano, and in various piano settings. . In 1806, Beethoven approved an arrangement (not by him) for two violins and viola, which was published that year. It was assigned the misleadingly-high opus number of 87, which would seem to place it near the Seventh Symphony; in fact, this music was written before Beethoven had published his Opus 1. The Sonata begins with Introduction and features a melodic and romantic theme with beautiful chords. Hoedown, in D minor, is very lively and tuneful. The Waltz is a lovely theme that undergoes some insightful development. The finale, Gigue, is a 6/8 dance which is quite a romp and features some fast bow work on a very catchy tune. My youngest daughter recently asked me to write some more things she could play in church, and being too busy to do something from scratch, it occurred to me that this piece would work fine for violin. It is about six minutes long with some nice mood changes. It would make a fine prelude, offertory or special. It would also be a good concert or recital piece.    It is challenging -- not a good selection for anyone less than advanced intermediate. The piano accompaniment also has its challenges. However, people who have heard this piece have found it quite enjoyable and have said so.   I wish a had a recording of a live performance to share with you, but this Finale version is really not to bad, especially when you consider that I am not very good yet at using the human playback feature that Finale offers. Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799) drew attention to himself even as a child due to his musical talent: At the age of seven he took violin lessons, only three years later he was hired as a violinist in Vienna and played little solos. His numerous compositions and particularly his 'singspiels' (song-plays) were very popular with the audience: Ditters von Dittersdorf's comedy 'Der Apotheker und der Doktor' even outdid Mozart's 'Le nozze di Figaro' in contemporary popularity in 1786. In 1766 Dittersdorf wrote the Violin Concerto in C major while being in service as leader of a music band in Großwardein, a post he had accepted in succession to Michael Haydn. The solo part was probably played by the composer himself at the first performance.
