♫ The movements of the tone poem Three Psalms are written using contemporary classical music composition techniques.
♫ The English text “Praise the LORD†here is actually the English of the Hebrew term “Hallelujah.†Hallelujah is a special, holy word made of 2 parts. The “Hallel†signifies the praise; the Jah (Yah) is part of God’s covenant name Yahweh. This name was and is so holy that it is not uttered by Jews lest they violate the 4th Commandment.
♫ There is an interesting sequence in the Psalm. Three times we see a progression of high to low, from the heavens to the earth, from the clouds to the insects, from kings to children. The tone poem begins in the highest range of the piano and solo instrument, and gradually moves down to the lower ones.
♫ The 3 themes are set in the Lydian, Dorian, and Phrygian modes.
