Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. 6 pages. Sally Whitwell #3874655. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873037).

I suffer terribly from insomnia. I usually get up and read a book, play a computer game, or can exorcise my thoughts with pen and paper, after which I find myself in dreamland pretty quickly. Either that or I wind up endlessly pacing around my studio, our cats watching me with some amusement.

Thus it was with The Insomnia Waltz. Half of a reasonably good tune was running laps in my brain in the wee small hours. I got up, wrote it in my manuscript book, immediately went back to bed and fell asleep. In the morning, I read through the fragments of melody, put them together, and ended up with this frustratingly meandering stopstart of a piece for violin and piano.

Sonata Violin/Piano: THE HIGH LINE (2015)

Commissioned by Gregory Fulkerson, Professor of Music, The Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

Gregory Fulkerson writes: Andrew Shapiro is a composer and songwriter living in Brooklyn. I first met him during his senior year at Oberlin when he acted as an audio assistant for my 1998 Merkin Hall concert in New York. I reconnected with him by chance in 2012, and we discussed working together to develop a violin sonata. I love the forthright and amiable spirit that permeates the piece; it is definitely in a pop style, yet he handles the standard acoustic sonorities deftly and there is a wealth of detail in the patterns of the violin. I don’t know anything else quite like it.

Andrew Shapiro writes: In 2011 I fell into a job as a High Line Park Ranger so as to be able to spend considerable time at this new, rather bizarre park. When there weren’t huge mobs of people around (and it wasn’t absolutely freezing), during my year working there I often found myself near the top of the Gansevoort stairs contemplating the view of the river. After a while I got the idea to write a few sweet and simple pieces of music about it at different times of the day.

ALL SLEEPING ON THE HILL

While  it  flowing words and pictures

All are sleeping on the hill

They are so many, so beautiful and pale

They are waiting on the hill

Princesses  looking  frail

That pose  themselves  unnecessary questions

They are  died and  now are  free

but  they wonder why

If I Had  been more yielding, if I had  been a little 'more docile

He is always  so unstable, maybe it was my fault

If I Had known take him, and learned not to respond

If I always said yes, I would be alive and still there

They are women of all nationalities

And girls   who never bloom

While  the seasons and the years pass

Their face is ageless

And they are mothers, daughters or lovers

Prostitutes,  holy or wives

No heaven or hell

They are waiting for you

Tonight the sky is brighter

They will be shining

Shooting stars now that you do not have a sky

Tell me where you flee

Do you feel guilty

But you're not you that you have sinned

Hide the signs

And the secret inside you

Everybody knows

but it is more comfortable silence

As long as you lie to yourself

I had a dream, a nightmare, but I was awake

On the hill expecting me

Princess,  sleeps in the trash

Your  Prince  control no longer has

And a tear remains motionless

Witness of this' atrocities

You Follow the avenue of pain and tears

And  walking on the hill

and reach the motionless  companions

Waiting for you on the hill

unites them by  horrible fate

Different stories with the same ending

And as avenging  goddesses expect

The man who defiled

And it is a black angels  army

their choir is high is unstoppable

resonates loud, an echo that is relentless

haunt your sleep

and a thousand ways to beat you know;

Hide the world what you really are

the last  image  behind  those  eyes

the blind fury inside you

while in the sky it appears lightning

I launch myself on the hill

I put a flower and remain motionless

And and I fall asleep here , on the hill ......... ..

Composed by Robert M. Greenberg. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and individual part. 29 pages. Robert M. Greenberg #100609. Published by Robert M. Greenberg (A0.987851).

Preferred Contact Information: RMonteverdi@comcast.net Performing Rights Organization: BMI Website: robertgreenbergmusic.com Facebook Band Page: facebook.com/RobertGreenbergMusic Duration: ca. 6 1/2 minutes Year of composition: 2011 Program Note: Titles, like mold-scum atop month-old cottage cheese, can take on a life of their own. South Bay Angle was originally composed in 1991 during an Astor Piazzolla-inspired fit of tango-madness. While a more appropriate title for the piece would have been something on the lines of I Can Write One of Those! or This Gringo’s Token Tango, circumstances conspired in another titular direction. The piece was originally intended for performance on a program produced by Composers, Inc., a new-music collective in which I was (and remain) an artistic director. Composers Inc. was then in its seventh season. In those days when newspapers still mattered, Composers, Inc. sought to receive as many print reviews as possible. To that end, the organization invited Paul Hertelendy - who was then the music critic for the San Jose Mercury News - to cover its concerts. He said he would do so provided that there was some sort of south-bay angle which addressed the specific needs of his south-bay readership. Thinking myself clever, I thus entitled the piece South Bay Angle. Hertelandy would get his angle and Composers, Inc. would get its coverage. It didn’t work out that way. The piece was never performed; Hertelendy never got his angle; and Composers, Inc. never received a review from the San Jose Mercury News. Instead, twenty years later, I returned to South Bay Angle and rewrote it from the ground up. The piece is cast as a large-scale A-B-A form. The violin is a willing participant in the tango during the A sections, but a rather reluctant tangoista in the B section, during which it tries mightily to turn the music into a waltz. It does not succeed, and the piece ends as it began, in a blaze of rhythmic fury.

Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by Diego Marani. 20th Century,Classical,Film/TV,Instructional,Romantic Period. 10 pages. Diego Marani #814506. Published by Diego Marani (A0.1217985).

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninov between June 1900 and April 1901. No other concerto by Rachmaninoff was as popular with audiences and pianists alike as his Second Concerto ant it is one of the most often performed concertos in the repertoire.
Numerous films borrow themes from the composition and it has also inspired numerous songs, like two ones recorded by Frank Sinatra and Eric Carmen's 1975 ballad All by Myself (sung also by Celine Dion).

This arrangement for violin with piano of the marvelous and very famous second movement is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

By Jeremiah Klarman. By Jeremiah Klarman. Arranged by Jeremiah Klarman. Chamber,Classical. 14 pages. Inner Places Music, LLC #806986. Published by Inner Places Music, LLC (A0.1208882).

A heartfelt tribute to the victims of terror attacks and violence, specifically of the mass shootings in Paris and San Bernardino in 2015. Elegy is a musical journey through grief and contains fragments of themes that ultimately do not get resolved, in the same way that a loss is never fully healed. These motifs repeat recurringly and join together to make melodies, echoing the anger, shock, fear and sadness that so many people experience as a result of these tragedies. I found myself moved to tears while writing Elegy and it is one of my most vulnerable and personal pieces to date.

Composed by Pietro Mascagni. Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Classical,Easter,Film/TV,Opera,Romantic Period. 8 pages. RBMusic #904730. Published by RBMusic (A0.1315952).

In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.

Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.

Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come.

The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame.

The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.

Composed by Robert Daniel. Broadway,Classical,Film/TV,Musical/Show. 25 pages. RDMusicStudios #854759. Published by RDMusicStudios (A0.1261681).

On April 19, 2019, I started writing my first composition, His Memory, on my first album, Show Your Pride. The Show Your Pride album was influenced by my best friend, Nigel Shelby, who tragically passed away by suicide after experiencing bullying for being outed as gay. It has been a few years since his death turned a national spotlight on the issue of LGBTQIA+ mental health and bullying. He was 15 years old at the time of his passing. I feel like I've been stabbed in the heart when I found he was gone. It was the first time I had lost anybody that I was close to. I was in a lot of pain at the time. Losing my best friend is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences I have had in my life. This album is telling a coming-out story about a bisexual musician going on a self-discovery journey to find his true authentic self.

I first met Nigel in mid-2018 when I was nervous, struggling with depression, and coming out as bisexual, so I gathered enough strength and confidence to come out to him. He's very kind and supportive of me. He was brave enough to come out to me as well. He has been a really good friend and my spirit guide as long as I've known him. He was understanding, thoughtful, and had a maturity about him that I admired. I feel happy and honored to have known him and had the best friends with him. I truly believe he is watching over me every day.

In this inspirational, heartbreaking piece, His Memory, I will share a coming-out story about two boys who came out to each other, spending their friendship together until one of them passes away. This piece is based on a true story of how I coped with grief, dealing with depression about my best friend's passing, and how I found happiness within myself after his memorial service. It drew inspiration from many compositions and soundtracks, including Where The Sky Has No Stars by Katahj Copley, Lose You Now by Lindsey Stirling (feat. Mako), You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, April Sky by Lin Chin Cheng, and Avatar The Last Airbender by Jeremy Zuckerman. These compositions I mentioned express hope and spark memories of lost loved ones. This piece is in 3 Acts: Friendship, I Lost You. and His Memory Lives On. Each one was inspired by actual events.

Act I: Friendship
Act II: I Lost You
Act III: His Memory Lives On

While you are listening to this piece, I want you to think about someone you love who is no longer with you. If you're one of those people who lost someone special to you, I am so sorry for your loss. Just know that you are not alone. Don't try to run and hide from your grief. Whatever your grief experience, it's important to be patient with yourself and allow the process to naturally unfold. You will grieve for as long as you need to, but you are a strong person and will find your way through this. Life is so precious. Cherish every moment with your loved ones.

Coming out is one of the most difficult things a person can do, but if you are having difficulty or are unsure about it, just know that there are people out there who do love you for who you are. Learn to embrace your authentic self. Don't let your sexual orientation define who you are. The right people will accept you and those are the only people who matter. Be yourself, be happy, and do what you feel. Don't care so much about what others think and enjoy your life! Keep following your heart and don't be afraid to stand out!
