Jacques Leguerney began the composition of his First Sonata for Piano and Violin in 1926, shortly after beginning composition studies with Nadia Boulanger. She was reportedly quite enthusiastic about the natural talent of her new student, and offered to give him private lessons to supplement her analysis classes. Leguerney was already reticent about studying composition. In an interview in 1989, he remembered his feeling at that time, saying that I found that this was useless work. If one is gifted for music, one is capable of writing harmonies. instead, Leguerney showed his Sonata to the French composer Albert Roussel, who was renting an apartment on Avenue Wagram in a building next to that of the Leguerney family. Leguerney
remembered Roussel's apartment with its dark blue walls and gilded Indian statues! Roussel encouraged his efforts and said of the second theme of the first movement: I would have liked to have written that. (J'aurais été très content d'avoir écrit ça.)
The first performance of the Sonata was given by the pianist Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944) and the violinist Hortense de Sampigny (? – 1970) in a private concert. The violinist was already a well-known concert artist. De Sampigny finished her studies at the Paris Conservatory in 1915, where she was in the class of Jules Boucherit. In 1918 she married the French author Auguste Bailly (1878-1967). From 1921, she was a member of the Trio Trillat, founded by the pianist Ennemond Trillat with the collaboration of cellist Jean Witkowski. The Trio was active in concerts and recordings in France and abroad for about thirty years. De Sampigny later taught at the Conservatory as assistant to René Benedetti. Thérèse Cahen had studied piano, harmony and counterpoint at the Schola Cantorum, where she obtained a Second Prize. She was a faithful friend and muse for Leguerney, and recruited many musicians for first performances of his vocal and chamber works. She was deported to Auschwitz on July 31, 1944, a few weeks before the Liberation of Paris.

This edition of the Sonata was performed at a private concert in Vernon (France) in July 2011 by French violinist Marion Larigaudrie and pianist Mary Dibbern.  It is based upon the autograph manuscript OL 23, on deposit at the Music Department of the Bibliothèque national in Paris.

Also known as Air on the G string. This is an easy arrangement for violin and piano. The rhythm has been simplified to the double of its lenght for a better reading. The piano part is easier for the left hand that only plays a simple bass line and some secondary voices have been eliminated or slightly changed. The principal melody on the violin is written almost as the original. The pdf includes the piano score (two pages) and the violin part (one page). If you want the bass line to be the same as the original for the piano part you can find it on Sheet Music Plus published by Daniel C. M. Click where it says Publisher: Daniel C. In 2022 I was commissioned to write a piece which would accompany a proposal submitted to the College Music Society conference in Boise, ID. Part of the proposal suggested music that celebrated the rich musical heritage of the Northwest. In looking around at what that meant, I discovered a curious fact about Boise: it has the only Basque heritage museum in the country. Suddenly the wheels got to turning! 

Basquing (2022) seeks to invoke... bask, if one will, in the sounds and feelings of another time and place. The inspiration of the piece comes from the Basque region of France with quotations from folksong, fiddle music, and a general vibe of French impressionism. 

The piece opens with the folksong Atzo Goizean, the lyrics to which invoke the folksy elements of village living (talking about waking to the thrush’s song, fathers arranging marriages, etc.). The urge to ‘word paint’ the folk song with it references to thrushes and partridges, is tempting, but the urge was avoided in this case, instead opting for a general “vibe�, or feeling. The next section avoids quotation altogether, instead opting to steep into the mystique environment created before. The last major portion of the piece utilizes what was billed (to me at least) as a Basque fiddle tune (the title lost as it seems the scholarly research on the subject and tunes that comprise the genre are lacking even by those who claim to have some knowledge of it). Assuming the best, however, the fiddle tune quoted in Basquing is meant to be a musical representation of familial resemblance to the fiddle music of the Pacific Northwest and how folk music of all varieties is at one time so specific yet at the same time broad in its understanding across cultures. 

Commissioned in 2022 by Arthur Houle (pianist) and Joung Hoon Song (violinist) for the Pacific Northwest College Music Society Conference 2023 in Boise, ID and premiered at said conference on March 17th, 2023.

I recently discovered Tamsin Waley-Cohen's recording of the complete CPE Bach sonatas for violin and piano. I was enthralled by her playing and CPE's music!!! 

Confession: I have been a fan of CPE for decades!!! 

My next project is a sonata for violin and piano. I thought I should try my hand at incorporating CPE's style into TOLmusic. Why not??? This will be my fifth sonata for violin and piano. The work is in seven movements. 

NB: I accidentally found some enigmatic titles in CPE's Petites Pièces per il Cembalo Solo. These are so amusing and funny compared to the usual Adagio, Allegro,Presto, etc. I see as titles in CPE's music that I decided to steal a few of them for my own work.

This Violin arrangement is of an easy-intermediate level, though is in B minor and has some sections in 12/8 time. In the time of travelling violin virtuosos in the 19th century, the Belgian composer Henri Vieuxtemps was regarded as one of the 'greatest', next to Paganini, Spohr, Bériot, Wieniawski and others. His concert tours led him to the 'new world' and through Europe to Russia where he lived in Petersburg for a few years and founded the violin class at the local conservatoire. His most important pupil - after his return to his Belgian home country - was Eugène Ysaÿe. As a composer, he had written compositions mainly, though not exclusively for 'his' instrument, the violin. He also wrote concertos and chamber music, especially catchy salon music repertoire pieces such as his Rondino, a virtuoso piece with a soulful middle section - a real treat as an encore!

The Pavane (Italian: pavana, padovana; German: Paduana) was a slow processional dance common in Europe during the 16th century. Although the dance died out in the next century, the musical form continued into the 20th Century. THE LAST PAVANE was composed by Enrique Granados, a composer of classical music and concert pianist from Catalonia, Spain. This may have been one of his last compositions for piano. He died an early and tragic death when the ship he was traveling on was sunk by a German torpedo in the English Channel in 1916. This arrangement is an INTERMEDIATE VIOLIN SOLO with a PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT. A separate music sheet for the violin is included with the score.

♫ After the victory of Yahweh over Ba’al at Mount Carmel, Elijah and the people executed the 450 prophets of Ba’al. For the first time in 3 years, Elijah prays for rain. In the following rainstorm, Elijah outruns Ahab’s chariot returning to Samaria. But the next morning it seems as if nothing has happened. Jezebel still has her 400 prophets. She sends a message to Elijah that he will be killed.

♫ Elijah is discouraged and defeated. Did Mt Carmel really mean nothing? He runs for the wilderness, complaining to God. He is so disheartened that he asks God to take his life. He makes a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb where Moses received the Law, fasting for 40 days, still complaining. He yearns for God to answer him. As at Mt Carmel, God had demonstrated His power at Sinai with thunderstorm and lightning. Elijah is evidently expecting large dramatic gestures for God to reveal Himself. But now God will teach Elijah that He also acts in ordinary, quiet ways, as will his continued ministry
