By YO YO MA and Kathryn Stott. By Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional. 8 pages. Flavio Regis Cunha #6669111. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.601828).

Rachmaninoff: Zdes' Khorosho, Op. 21, No. 7 (as played by Yo Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott) ARRANGED for VIOLIN and Piano.

___________________________________________

ЗдеÑÑŒ хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.
Songs of Comfort and Hope
is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of Antonín Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. The album includes 21 new recordings, which span modern arrangements of traditional folk tunes, canonical pop songs, jazz standards, and mainstays from the western classical repertoire.

Composed by Serghei Rachmaninov. Arranged by Adrian F. Pipas. 20th Century. 7 pages. Adrian F. Pipas #6642575. Published by Adrian F. Pipas (A0.948808).

In 1963, the Russian composer Vladimir Michailovich Jurowski (father and grandfather of conductors) orchestrated ten songs by Rachmaninov, including Zdes' khorosho, and there is a later orchestration of this song by Michael Rot. You know that I usually find it difficult to renounce the original piano versions, especially when the composer didn't orchestrated them, but I recommend you to listen to Anna Netrebko singing this song with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.

You might wonder why I don't share this version here, there are two reasons: first, I can’t do without that beautiful piano; two, I chose my version months ago (something that lately happens quite often). I said before that Zdes' khorosho is between contemplation and passion; Most of singers enhance the most contemplative perspective, that's the case of the lovely performance by Anna Netrebko. Others sing the most passionate version, like the one we’re listening today. Its tempo is faster than usual, it lasts about a minute and a half; maybe it would surprise you if you're used to slower versions. I hope you enjoy this song as much as me; I think this performance by Nicolai Gedda and Gerald Moore, recorded live in 1966, is wonderful.

No. 2 Love's Sorrow. Composed by Fritz Kreisler. Arranged by Mats Lidstroem. This edition: Sheet music. Violin Library. Downloadable. Duration 5 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q46994. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q46994).

This arrangement of the three-part collection published in 1905 is based on Fritz Kreisler's original version as well as later pianoforte transcriptions by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The harmonies, chromatic developments and even the counterpoint of the piano transcriptions remain unchanged; original and transcription combine to create a virtuoso and effective solo piece. The three-four time typical of Vienna demands a certain, hardly noticeable freedom of tempo without constraints of a metronome.

Composed by Bela Bartok. Arranged by Uri A. Dror - edition Prima Vista. 20th Century,Contemporary,Folk,Multicultural,World. Score and individual part. 21 pages. Edition Prima Vista - Uri A. Dror #5722573. Published by edition Prima Vista - Uri A. Dror (A0.956104).

Bartok's Romanian Dances were originally written for piano. He later arranged them himself for a small ensemble. The version usually heard today, however, is the one by Zoltan Szekely, who transcribed them for violin and piano. The current arrangement is based on Szekely’s version.

Bela Bartok was a keen collector and researcher of Romanian and Hungarian folk music, and came across these tunes on his expeditions to uncover the folk music of Transylvania. They were probably played on a violin or a folk-style shepherd's flute - which makes them very suitable for the recorder, either a soprano (in one case, a sopranino), or an alto.

The recorder part of this arrangement can also be played on a flute / piccolo flute.

Composed by Nino Rota. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik. Contemporary. 8 pages. F & N Enterprise #6235465. Published by F & N Enterprise (A0.636116).

An excellent arrangement of the famous Song The Godfather for Violin and Piano-Jazz/Pop Version.

The video for Violin and Piano: https://youtu.be/cobeS1NZNwM

The composition is easy to read, fun to play, and sound professional when performed. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik, a very well known as Composer/Publisher. His books Jazz & Pop Piano Paradise (Volumes 1-5) have become a commercial success and a hit with music teachers and students in Canada. (Thousands of books already sold in Canada). They are also starting to enter the US, Brazil, Norway, Russia, Holland, Israel, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Latvia, and the UK markets. This is a wonderful new publication. These pieces offer much appeal for the young pianist and excellent choice for a supplementary book for students from Grade 3 to 8. Lore Ruschiensky, Editor, (from the review in The Canadian Music Teacher) Yesterday I spent at least two pleasure-filled hours playing through your imaginatively inventive compositions. Congratulations! I trust students will decide to program your well crafted and entertaining works on recitals and examinations. Review from Dr. Jack Behrens, B.Sc. (Julliard), Ph.D. (Harvard), Director of Academic Studies, The Glenn Gould School I liked this book the best so far. Great work! You have a gift for melody and your arrangements are very playable. Congratulations on the 3rd Volume. Mark Carlstein, Hal Leonard, Keyboard Publications.
