Composer: F.Chopin

Key: Desdur
Orchestration: violin & piano
Level: Intermediate
(There are individual differences in level)
*with part score
*This is an arrangement of the 1st edition.

This first version is an arrangement in which the melody is mostly played by the violin. The end is not the end of the 24 tuplet, but the end that appears first (not a tuplet).

In the second version, the melody is passed from the violin to the piano in the middle. In the final 24-tuplet, the piano becomes the main melody, and there is a part where the violin harmonizes. Only the last six notes of the 24th note are played by three instruments, each eighth note.

Please choose according to your preference.

I arranged Chopin's famous piece into a piano trio. Please take this opportunity to try it.

Composed by Joseph Martin Kraus. Arranged by Bertil van Boer. Classical. 36 pages. Artaria Editions #1065694. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488840).

Artaria Editions AE435

Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one).

Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including this sonata for violin and fortepiano. It is not known for whom this work was written, but the sole surviving source, a set of parts in Uppsala University Library in the hand of Fredrik Silverstolpe, Kraus's first biographer and assiduous collector of his music, dates it to Kraus's grand tour; he notes that it was written in Paris in 1785.

The sonata received its final form for keyboard alone as part of the Due Sonata per il Forte Piano published by Olof Åhlstrm some three years later in 1788. This sonata differs from the solo pianoforte version (also published by Artaria Editions as AE398) in that it is shorter (particularly in the slow movement) and less elaborate for both instruments. Nonetheless, it is an impressive sonata and among the most interesting works of its kind composed in the 1780s.

By Friedrich Fritz Kreisler (February 2, 1875 – January 29, 1962). By Friedrich Fritz Kreisler. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Romantic Period. 12 pages. Keith Terrett #1026182. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1446374).

Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Melodies in German) is a set of three short pieces for violin and piano composed by Austrian-American violinist Fritz Kreisler. The three pieces are titled Liebesfreud (Love's Joy), Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow), and Schön Rosmarin (Lovely Rosemary).

It is not known when the pieces are written, but they were published in 1905, deliberately misattributed to Joseph Lanner.[citation needed] The pieces had become parts of Kreisler's repertoire well before September 1910, when he copyrighted them under his own name.

Kreisler often played these pieces as encores at his concerts, though the pieces are usually performed separately.

In 1911, he published solo piano arrangements of the pieces as Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen. The pieces have since appeared in numerous settings for other instruments, or orchestrated.

Two of the pieces, Liebesfreud and Liebesleid, were the subject of virtuoso transcriptions for solo piano by Kreisler's friend Sergei Rachmaninoff (1931), who also recorded these transcriptions.

Composed by Joseph Martin Kraus. Arranged by Bertil van Boer. Classical. 46 pages. Artaria Editions #1065692. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488838).

Artaria Editions AE433

Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one).

Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including four sonatas for violin and fortepiano; a fifth sonata, in D minor, was written in 1777 expressly for violin and clavicembalo, representing a different sort of piece than the more common duo sonata.

The date of the D major sonata is not known, although it was probably written during Kraus's first years in Stockholm; stylistic evidence strongly suggests that it, and its companion piece, the Sonata in C major (VB 160), date from the later part of that period 1780-1782. Kraus was a proficient performer on both instruments and his sonatas, which display all his usual musical ingenuity and technical finish, are highly attractive works.

Song Of The Liberty Bell (violin solo part – violin and piano) MO130B

Violin Solo Part (score available)

Music by Mark O’Connor

3 pages - 5:00 minutes in length

Song Of The Liberty Bell adapted for violin and piano was composed by Mark O’Connor and used as the theme song for the critically acclaimed PBS documentary, Liberty! The American Revolution. O’Connor wrote the piece to include three different instrument groupings - unaccompanied solo, folk ensemble, and string orchestra. The Sony Classical album Liberty! features Song Of The Liberty Bell in all three arrangements. O’Connor later adapted his piece for violin and piano. Album notes author Thomas Fleming calls the music profoundly moving with exquisite melody. Fleming further describes the orchestral version - O’Connor joins in, and the instruments of the symphony pick up the theme. It is a musical replication of the way the voices of liberty in 1776 began with a lonely defiant few - and then swelled to a tremendous national chorus that has resounded through the world for the next two hundred and thirty-three years. The music is suited for all levels.

Composed by Clémence de Grandval. Arranged by Paul Wehage (édition). Romantic Period. 29 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #950961. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1366622).

Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris. After the death of her mother,Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarriedwith an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studiesprivately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, MichelCarré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chieflyknown today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.  This work was written for Paul Viardot, the son of Pauline and a well-known violin virtuoso during La Belle époque.
