The symphonic suite SCHEHERAZADE by Rimsky-Korsakov is a popular staple of the classical music repertoire. This arrangement, THE YOUNG PRINCE AND PRINCESS, is from the third movement. It is arranged as an EASY INTERMEDIATE VIOLIN SOLO with a PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT, and a violin solo sheet is included with the score. The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on the trumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite.

This full version is arranged as a solo for Violin and Piano and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet version of this arrangement.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. There are of course separate piano and instrumental parts included in downloaded the file.

Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with strict time, full tone and dynamic contrast.

This easy arrangement for violin and piano was written to be uncomplicated to perform and understand the structure of the piece. It can be freely played by beginning students, because of the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not prevent it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument.

A chaconne is musical composition popular in the baroque era with variations on a repeated short harmonic progression using a short repetitive bass-line. Durand's CHACONNE was published in Paris in 1868. This arrangement is an INTERMEDIATE VIOLIN SOLO with PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT. It is a lively piece that will please the players and the audience alike. A separate sheet for the violin is provided in addition to the score. Rameau was a French composer and music theorist in the early part of the 18th Century who was known for using unusual instruments, one of the which was the Tambourin, a small flute popular in his operas. This arrangement for EASY INTERMEDIATE VIOLIN with a PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT was composed by Rameau for the TAMBOURIN. A solo sheet for the violin is included with the score. Other similar arrangements by McIntire include The Young Prince and Princess from Scherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov and Arioso from Cantata BMV 165 by Bach.

This is one of the most well-known of all British folksongs and refers to real historical events. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skye�) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.  

 The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boat�) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king� to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.� The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  

 In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. 

 The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. In this arrangement for violin and piano, much of the piece is playable in first position and uses the lower register.

Programme Notes
Born in Budapest, Franz de Vecsey showed an extraordinary talent for the violin from a young age. His musical journey began under the guidance of his father, Lajos Vecsey, but it was his subsequent studies with renowned violinist Jenő Hubay that truly shaped his virtuosity. At the tender age of 10, he impressed none other than Joseph Joachim with his exceptional skills, solidifying his status as a child prodigy.

However, in the 1930s, tragedy struck. Just as Vecsey was poised to fulfill his dreams, he fell gravely ill with a pulmonary embolism, a condition that plagued him throughout his life. Seeking medical treatment, he traveled to Rome, where he underwent surgery in the hope of a recovery. Unfortunately, the operation proved unsuccessful, and at the tragically young age of 42, Franz de Vecsey succumbed to his illness.

His piece, Valse Triste in C minor, composed in 1913 and dedicated to Princesse Elena Lante della Rovere, serves as a poignant reminder of Vecsey's musical genius. Through its haunting melodies and evocative harmonies, the composition encapsulates the depth of his emotions and the profound beauty of his art. Though his life was cut tragically short, Franz de Vecsey's legacy lives on.

La Pavane pour une infante défunte est à l'origine une pièce pour piano de Maurice Ravel composée en 1899 et dédiée à la princesse de Polignac. La création de la version pianistique eut lieu à Paris le 5 avril 1902 par le pianiste Ricardo Viñes. Son exécution dure environ six minutes. La Pavane a été orchestrée par Ravel en 1910. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard.
