This work was especially arranged for Thomas Stumpf and Joanna Kurkowicz and was adapted from the second movement of my Violin Concerto No. 1. The inspiration comes from the melodic shapes and sentiments of the hymns and chants of the Syrian Orthodox Church. Though there is no direct referenceto any particular hymn or chant in that repertoire, it is the formal structure and melodic contour from that tradition that provided inspiration for Hymn; especially in the opening and closing sections. The inner feelings of Hymn reflect on one aspect of the nature of faith, and how one holds on to it in a tumultuous world. This is reflected in the middle section where the piano's jagged rhythms attempt to throw off the steady pulses of the violin. Only faith in one's own inner rhythm can keep the violinist moving steadily forward. -Kareem Roustom.

The Korean funeral is rather a ceremony with a brilliantly decorated coffin and a group of choruses singing a traditional funeral tune throughout the entire process. The piece consists of three sections: The first section represents the scene where the coffin is brought to the burial site. The opening chord in the piano symbolizes the head of the mourning parade who rings a small bell while the casket is carried to its final resting place. The mood of the first section is heaving sounding by employing the lowest register of the piano and using triple stops in the violin while maintaining a slow tempo. The second section characterizes the process of burying the coffin. It implies an irritating, aggressive and desperate atmosphere of the people who cannot face the death and the separation of the recently deceased. The minor second interval, staccatos on the fast passage scales and the constant banging rhythm support the ambiance of this section. The last section corresponds to the return of the parade. It resembles the first section mostly with the grief, regrets and sighs. The high pitch glissando in the violin and the figure in the piano’s low register express the distance between the soul and the human.

The 1st movement was composed in a traditional sonata form with two opposing themes following a short introduction, “Jindo Arirang� and the rhythms of “Semachi� were cited. In the 2nd movement, the lyrical beauty is expressed using the theme of “Arirang,� which is the most representative Korean folk song and is well known worldwide. And for 3rd movement, the Korean nursery rhyme “Eolle Kollery� is cited, which is based on a four-time system, is used to express a humorous atmosphere. For reference, “Eollekoleri� is a language used by children to make fun of others. The last 4th movements are in the rondo form of ABACAD, and between the A and A subjects, three different folk songs, “Miryang Arirang�, Cheonan Samgeori(Three-way Intersection), and “Saeya Saeya Palangsaeya�(Blue Bird) are cited, and at the same time, the Korean rhythms “Kutkori� and “Jajinmori� and Semachi were comprehensively cited. Due to the characteristic of the 4th movement in which the theme is used in layers, it was given the nickname “Korean Folk Song Sandwich�. South Bay Angle was originally composed in 1991 during an Astor Piazzolla-inspired fit of tango-madness. While a more appropriate title for the piece would have been something on the lines of I Can Write One of Those! or This Gringo’s Token Tango, circumstances conspired in another titular direction. The piece was originally intended for performance on a program produced by Composers, Inc., a new-music collective in which I was (and remain) an artistic director. Composers Inc. was then in its seventh season. In those days when newspapers still mattered, Composers, Inc. sought to receive as many print reviews as possible. To that end, the organization invited Paul Hertelendy - who was then the music critic for the San Jose Mercury News - to cover its concerts. He said he would do so provided that there was some sort of south-bay angle which addressed the specific needs of his south-bay readership. Thinking myself clever, I thus entitled the piece South Bay Angle. Hertelandy would get his angle and Composers, Inc. would get its coverage. It didn’t work out that way. The piece was never performed; Hertelendy never got his angle; and Composers, Inc. never received a review from the San Jose Mercury News. Instead, twenty years later, I returned to South Bay Angle and rewrote it from the ground up. The piece is cast as a large-scale A-B-A form. The violin is a willing participant in the tango during the A sections, but a rather reluctant tangoista in the B section, during which it tries mightily to turn the music into a waltz. It does not succeed, and the piece ends as it began, in a blaze of rhythmic fury.

You might take a look at this same arrangement of mine in the original key of E Major; even in that key, this is still an intermediate work. This is one of those times when nothing beats the songwriter's original key.This would be a phenomenal closer for recitals or concerts. A great show-piece for social and civic events, its inspiring message would even serve in church-related functions. Keep your eye open for performance opportunities for social groups tackling issues like depression and self-image. As the song says, Wake up, wake up! This soon leads into a lively folk-like Moderato Dance section with a great catchy tune and punchy rhythms. These two different sections compliment one another, adding variety and excitement as they repeat themselves half way through so that both melodies get plenty of work-out! The piece would very much suit young players, although amateurs and professionals alike can enjoy it.

In 4 distinct sections, the themes in the piece are not of Romani origin, but were all actually adapted from Hungarian music pieces: e.g. the last section uses a theme from Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13, in the rhythm of the csárdás. As one of Sarasate's most popular compositions and a favourite among violin virtuosos, the work has remained a staple concert item and on recordings  since Sarasate himself recorded it in 1904, The Piano part is adapted from the orchestral score.
