Piano,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549216 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Holiday,Standards,Wedding. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3468006. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549216). J. S. Bach BWV 508. Bist du bei mir Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.   Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.   Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands            Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival               Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Instrumental Solo,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.987851 Composed by Robert M. Greenberg. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and individual part. 29 pages. Robert M. Greenberg #100609. Published by Robert M. Greenberg (A0.987851). Preferred Contact Information: RMonteverdi@comcast.net Performing Rights Organization: BMI Website: robertgreenbergmusic.com Facebook Band Page: facebook.com/RobertGreenbergMusic Duration: ca. 6 1/2 minutes Year of composition: 2011 Program Note: Titles, like mold-scum atop month-old cottage cheese, can take on a life of their own. South Bay Angle was originally composed in 1991 during an Astor Piazzolla-inspired fit of tango-madness. While a more appropriate title for the piece would have been something on the lines of I Can Write One of Those! or This Gringo’s Token Tango, circumstances conspired in another titular direction. The piece was originally intended for performance on a program produced by Composers, Inc., a new-music collective in which I was (and remain) an artistic director. Composers Inc. was then in its seventh season. In those days when newspapers still mattered, Composers, Inc. sought to receive as many print reviews as possible. To that end, the organization invited Paul Hertelendy - who was then the music critic for the San Jose Mercury News - to cover its concerts. He said he would do so provided that there was some sort of south-bay angle which addressed the specific needs of his south-bay readership. Thinking myself clever, I thus entitled the piece South Bay Angle. Hertelandy would get his angle and Composers, Inc. would get its coverage. It didn’t work out that way. The piece was never performed; Hertelendy never got his angle; and Composers, Inc. never received a review from the San Jose Mercury News. Instead, twenty years later, I returned to South Bay Angle and rewrote it from the ground up. The piece is cast as a large-scale A-B-A form. The violin is a willing participant in the tango during the A sections, but a rather reluctant tangoista in the B section, during which it tries mightily to turn the music into a waltz. It does not succeed, and the piece ends as it began, in a blaze of rhythmic fury.

Piano,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1382422 Composed by Philip R Buttall. Children,Classical,Romantic Period,Traditional. 9 pages. PRB Music #742662. Published by PRB Music (A0.1382422). After being locked down by Covid, I had almost lost the will to live, let alone go on holiday again outside the UK. Two years before I had had a lovely time in Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Puccini's House, Florence, Sienna, and more. Almost at the end of the trip I stayed a couple of days with my dear musical friends in Perugia, where their then 8-year-old daughter, Martha, was making great strides forward on the violin (mum is a concert pianist and teacher, similarly dad, but on the clarinet. I had booked to stay in Cesena where they had moved two, and I had a lovely time here, two, adding Bologna, Rossini's Museum, Rimini and some of the Adriatic coast to my list of places visited. They, too, had had lockdowns, and cancellations, but quite by chance, the weekend I had planned to be in Cesena, was the rearranged date of a special outside concert in the imposing surroundings of Rocca Malatestiana, a medieval fortress than dominates the town. Martha was going to be performing a violin concerto by Rode, and her dad had adapted the orchestral accompaniment, so that the large clarinet ensemble could take its place on the night. It was a wonderful, moving evening, and Martha played so well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house! When I knew I was visiting them this year, I wrote Martha a little fun piece, with piano accompaniment, that she might have been able to play while I was there. But because of the rescheduled concerto performance, there just wasn't enough time for her to learn and practise the piece with her violin teacher in Bologna. I even added an optional part for clarinet, so dad would not feel left out. Hopefully, one day, I might still hear Waltz for Martha played by its dedicatees! It's a kind of schmalzy Viennese Waltz, in the style of Kreisler and others! You can purchase the piano score and violin part here. The optional clarinet part is available FREE OF CHARGE - by emailing info@philiprbuttall.co.uk.

Instrumental Duet,Piano Instrumental Duet,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1127398 Composed by ROBERT VAN HORNE. Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV,Instructional,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 26 pages. White Piano International Publishing #728022. Published by White Piano International Publishing (A0.1127398). THE FINAL WAVE for Violin & Piano Piano 22 pages / Violin 4 pages Approx. Time: 6:15 On Saturday afternoon, March 26, 2011, I was invited to a special meeting of Bay Area business people. Their purpose was wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that I compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan know they would not be forgotten.I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting that I went home and composed a new piece of music entitled: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. After a favorable response from the group, I began composing another piece for violin and piano entitled: THE FINAL WAVE. In this piece, I tried to paint the horror, destruction, uncertainty and sadness of the disaster while giving hope for a future for the people who witnessed this catastrophic event. Unfortunately, THE FINAL WAVE was never completed as planned back in 2011. However, eleven years later, I completed this memorable piano and violin duet. Even though it’s been many years since that terrible day of March 11, 2011, the music can still convey emotions of melancholy, discord, resilience and compassion for tragic and unforeseeable events of today. This timeless work is dedicated to remember and give hope to all those affected by disasters and catastrophic tragedies. This advanced level of music is clearly notated for piano and violin and can be an extraordinary supplemental selection for recitals and concerts. This musical recording of THE FINAL WAVE is an electronic representation available in the notation program. Robert Van Horne is a long standing member of ASCAP. Piano,Violin - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548506 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3387409. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548506). The First Noel arranged for Violin & Piano with new harmony for the final verse. Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Violin Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s.  Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol.  Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol.

DR GARY D BELSHAW #5981783. Published by DR GARY D BELSHAW (A0.796768). For the Intermediate Violinist. 15 pages. Duration: 4 minutes. In the key of D Major.First released as a single in 2012, Brave was included in Josh's sixth album, All That Echoes and included in the All That Echoes World Tour. Groban says the song is about about rejuvenation. It is an anthem in the style of You Raise Me Up.Josh Groban's musical style is often placed in the classical category, so it was perfectly natural to take this tune a step further and design it for recitals, seminars, recruiting tours, and for the advanced players in one's studio. Your accompanist will like the way the pizzicato rhythmic figures in the string section have been fleshed out with notes on strong beats to help make the rhythm fit the hand better and easier for you to stay with.Arranged in the key of D major, this is an intermediate work for violins. While some technical challenges may cause concern in the middle section, everything keeps your fingers in comfortable positions on the neck. Most of your time will be spent on the middle pair of strings. You might take a look at this same arrangement of mine in the original key of E Major; even in that key, this is still an intermediate work. This is one of those times when nothing beats the songwriter's original key. This would be a phenomenal closer for recitals or concerts. A great show-piece for social and civic events, its inspiring message would even serve in church-related functions. Keep your eye open for performance opportunities for social groups tackling issues like depression and self-image. As the song says, Wake up, wake up! Children,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 15 pages. Sharon Wilson #650775. Published by Sharon Wilson (A0.1046269). Here is an easy instrumental trio (for two VIOLINS with PIANO accompaniment) of the uplifting hymn O Jesus, I Have Promised by Arthur Henry Mann. This gently flowing arrangement will encourage reflection as the listeners are reminded of the lyrics penned by John Ernest Bode: O Jesus, I have promise to serve thee to the end; Be thou forever near me, my Master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide. Both VIOLIN parts get to lead with the melody at times making this a fun and equally challenging piece for both instruments while adding variety for the listeners. VIOLIN 1 plays the melody for the first verse and then VIOLIN 2 leads with the melody for the second verse. This flowing instrumental arrangement is an ideal selection for a worship setting and a valuable addition to your sacred string repertoire. Duration 2:10.
