Die zweite Violinsonate op. 58 entstand im November und Dezember 2009 und ist als freundliches Gegenstück zu der düster-aufgewühlten ersten Violinsonate op. 38 (2000) konzipiert. Die helle Grundstimmung des Werkes ist sicherlich nicht zuletzt durch seinen Enstehungsort Cervo an der ligurischen Riviera, meiner italienischen Wahlheimat, buchstäblich bei Sonnenschein unter blauem Himmel entstanden, beeinflusst. Dem ganzen Werk liegt ein musikalisches Motto zugrunde, das jedoch erst im abschließenden zehntaktigen Adagio amoroso, das aus einer versunkenen Welt zu entstammen scheint, verraten wird. Alles Material ist darauf bezogen und die ganze Sonate scheint eigentlich nur komponiert worden zu sein, um diese Schlussaussage formulieren zu können. Der erste Satz ist ein breit angelegtes Moderato mit zwei Themen in strenger Sonatenhauptsatzform. Sowohl thematisches Material als auch alle formalen Verbindungsglieder sind harmonisch wie melodisch aus den Intervallen der kleinen und großen Terz und deren Komplementärintervallen, der großen und kleinen Sext gebildet. Dieses beinahe serielle Verfahren wird allerdings von dem überschwänglich romantischen Gestus der Musik vollkommen kaschiert. Der sehr schnelle, federleicht schwebende zweite Scherzosatz wird beherrscht vom luftigen Pizzicato der Violine und flüchtigen Klavierfiguren, nur im gesanglichen Trio erhebt sich die Violine zu einer vierphrasigen, langsam aufsteigenden Kantilene auf choralartig akkordischem Untergrund des Klaviers. Die langsame Einleitung des Finalsatzes nähert sich dem abschließenden Motto bereits sehr deutlich ohne es ganz erklingen zu lassen. Diese Introduktion wird in die Mitte des zweithemigen, feurig dahinstürmenden Allegro anstelle einer Durchführung wieder aufgenommen und in den lebhaften Gestus des Schlusssatzes umgewandelt. Mit dem Erklingen des eigentlichen Herzstück des Werkes als Adagio amoroso schließt das Werk, sicherlich sehr überraschend für Neue Musik. - Stefan Heucke.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q20911). Die Sonate op. 38 entstand im November und Dezember 2000 und ist das einzige unmittelbar autobiographische Stück, das ich bisher komponiert habe. Es ist dem Gedenken eines toten Freundes gewidmet, den ich 17 Jahre lang aus den Augen verloren und im Sommer 2000 auf dem Friedhof wiedergefunden habe. Ein während der Zeit unserer Freundschaft im Herbst 1983 entstandener Plan für eine Violinsonate konnte nun verwirklicht werden. Die Initialen des Widmungsträgers – A.F. – beherrschen die gesamte Struktur des Werkes. Der erste, in unaufhaltsamer, wilder Bewegung voranstürmende Satz speist sich aus zwei ausladenden gesanglichen Themen, das erste aus dem Intervall A – F, das zweite aus dem Intervall (E)S - H gewonnen, die von unaufhörlichen Sechzehntelbewegungen des Klaviers vorangetrieben werden. Der zweite Satz schweißt drei Formteile in einen großen Variationssatz zusammen: Zunächst Thema und fünf Variationen über Brahms’ Volkslied Da unten im Tale, dann ein variierter Scherzosatz über eben dieses Thema und schließlich eine gedrängte Passacaglia, die auf der Basis des Klanges A - F die vergangenen musikalischen Ereignisse zusammenpresst. Zum Schluss erscheint noch einmal das Brahms-Lied in entrückter Klanggestalt in der entfernten Tonart E-Dur. Der Text dieses Liedes lautet: Da unten im Tale läufts Wasser so trüb, Und i kann dirs net sagen, i hab di so lieb. Sprichst allweil von Lieb, sprichst allweil von Treu, und a bissele Falschheit is au wohl dabei. Und wenn i dirs zehnmal sag, dass i di lieb, und du willst nit verstehen, muss i halt weiterziehen. Für die Zeit, wo du g’liebt mi hast, dank i dir schön, und i wünsch, das dirs anderswo besser mag gehen. - Stefan Heucke.

A Violin Sonata written in 2019, but which sounds more like 1869? There’s a reason for that: apart from the obvious and enjoyable challenge of writing an extended faux-19th century piece, the sonata is dedicated to the memory of my mother who - being a Brahms & Tchaikovsky gal through and through - had little use for music written after 1900. For instance, I remember when I was a lad and my father and I would listen to Stravinsky’s Le Sacre, Mom would always go out for a walk until it blew over. The Sonata has four movements: I. Largo-Moderato (7:10), II. Allegretto (5:00), III. Andante (7:00), IV. Bagatelles. Allegro non troppo (6:00). Total performance time is about 25 to 26 minutes. The audio file accompanying this description gives you a couple of minutes of each movement: most of the exposition of I; the end of the Scherzo and beginning of the Trio (with its curious three-measure phrases) of II; the closing measures of III; and the beginning of IV. (The sonata has been read by professional players and is guaranteed to work, but at this writing it has not been performed or recorded. Therefore the audio file is only a computer playback. Living musicians will be able to make far more sense of it.)

The Sarabanda for violin and piano (P015a) is a short composition consisting of three pages dated 1897, published here for the first time. The original manuscript is part of the private archive of Potito Pedarra, cataloguer of Ottorino Respighi’s compositional legacy. Ottorino Respighi composed this work during his youth in the same year as the Sonata in D minor (1897, P015), Giga (P015b) and Allegretto vivace (P015c), all scored for violin and piano. In 1898, Respighi transposed the Sarabanda to F major in order to incorporate it into the Suite per pianoforte (P022, unedited). Traces of the Sarabanda’s theme are recognizable in the Grave (Tempo di Sarabanda) of the second part of the unedited ballet Le Astuzie di Colombina (Scherzo veneziano), composed in 1920 (P130, unedited). The autograph manuscript of the Sarabanda for violin and piano has a number of posthumous markings which have not been included in this edition.

Artaria Editions AE436Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including this sonata for violin and fortepiano. It is not known for whom this work was written, but the sole surviving source, a set of parts in Uppsala University Library in the hand of Fredrik Silverstolpe, Kraus's first biographer and assiduous collector of his music, dates it to Kraus's grand tour; he notes that it was written in Paris in 1785. This sonata is the most virtuosic and imposing work in this genre that the composer wrote. Of particular interest is the use of a slow introduction with lyrical violin solo, the long Adagio with its alternating solo passages, and the playful final Scherzo which bears a thematic similarity to the now-lost original third movement of Kraus's Violin Concerto (VB 151). Indeed, this complex work merits the rubric Great C major.Allan Badley.
