Onward Christian Soldiers by Arthur Sullivan was composed in 1871. It is a lively and compelling march that has been continuously popular with Protestant congregations for 150 years. Apart from its obvious martial associations, the song has also been embraced by political causes such as the American civil rights movement. Elvis recorded his version named Love Me Tender which was recorded in 1956 and released as a single, along with the movie of the same name. The movie was a musical Western, starring Presley as Clint Reno, a young man who falls in love with his brother's fiancée after the brother is presumed dead in the Civil War. The song was a huge hit, selling over a million copies before the movie was released. The song has a simple and gentle melody, with a romantic and sentimental lyric.
