Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,World. 18 pages. Jmsgu3 #3508655. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549571).

Duration: ca. 2:17 Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 5 pages. A proven audience pleaser - perfect for a recital encore!

Grieg Background

In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and BedÅ™ich Smetana in Bohemia.

Legacy

Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.

Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)

Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.

Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary

It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Composed by Jesus J. Martinez. Contemporary. Score and parts. 1 pages. Jesus Martinez Music #2019881. Published by Jesus Martinez Music (A0.1030742).

PROGRAM NOTES: The Spear of Destiny is titled and inspired by the supposed spear that was used to kill Jesus Christ. The spear is said to have extraordinary powers. He who possesses it will rule the world and he who loses it thereafter will die an untimely death. The last person recorded to have had it was Adolf Hitler. This musical composition journeys through the time of Hitler and his obsession to obtain the spear, his atrocious acts during his tenure of the spear, and the loss of the spear. The spears main thematic motions are the glissandos in the violin that represent the spears anger and tortuous ways. I. Spear Found takes place during his times as an understudy of Dietrich Eckart, a dedicated satanist and figure in the Occult Thule Society and founding member of the Nazi party. Dietrich said: Follow Hitler! He will dance, but it is I who have called the tune! I have initiated him into the Secret Doctrine' opened his centres in vision and given him the means to communicate with the Powers. Do not morn for me; I shall have influenced history more than any other German. Hitler became enamored with the Spear of Destiny, which claimed it called to him. Spear Found, is Hitler's journey to capturing the spear to rule the world. II. Spear Possessed begins with no time meter or key signature. It is ad liberty of the performers and is a musical representation of the spears possessive powers towards evil. This movement takes place during the time of the Holocaust and the actions committed during Hitler's reign of world domination. The movement infers a jewish folk song titled, Dayeinu, a jewish Passover song meaning it would have been enough. This song is set in context of freedom. The movement goes through variations of Dayeinu and the spears version of a possessed Dayeinu. The violin has fast and rapid rhythms with small thematic material of the folk tune. At the end of the movement, the piano strikes the low end of the piano with a soft yarn mallet to symbolize the bombs dropping and the start of World War II. III. Spear Lost takes place during WWII and the Marines efforts to take down Hitler's reign. During the 3rd movement, the Marine Corps music comes to life as they take control of the spear and ultimately end the war. The Spear however, takes its last stand as the spears motif soars over the possessed marine tune. At the end of the movement, the spear is once again screeching as it survives and goes missing once again.

Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. 20 pages. Jmsgu3 #3500555. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549485).

VIOLIN & PIANO - Score: 11 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 5 pages. Duration: 4:20. This is a popular recital piece that would work well also in church or school programs.

Mendelssohn Background

Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician, and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words.

Artistic Standing

Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era.

Early Family Life

Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was suddenly baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent.

Early Adulthood

Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his significant works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint.

Mature Adulthood

Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure.

Musical Features

In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his systematic mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Secondly, it indicates that Mendelssohn sought to strengthen his inherited musical legacy rather than to exchange it with new forms and styles or replace it with exotic orchestration. Consequently, he diverged his contemporaries in the romantic period, such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuosity at the keyboard but found his music rather insubstantial.

Program notes:

Three Impressions of Northern Arizona

for flute (or violin) and piano

The three movements of this piece were composed in the summer of 2007 for Emily McKay, flute and Rita Borden, piano. I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Emil Kross and Fritz Meyer. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Copyright 2009 Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz. Downloadable. Op. 124/16. Schott Music - Digital #Q3900. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q3900).

He gave a present to me and my little Marie of a delightful lullaby composed that Christmas afternoon, Clara Schumann noted in the family diary they shared. This Slumer Song of 1841 Robert Schumann later included as No. 16 in his collection of Albumblätter (Album Leaves) Op. 124. The collection of twenty miniatures for piano was written over a fairly long period of time: the first piedes were written in 1832/33 and the composer started work on the last piece, the Canon, in 1845. In 1853 Schumann had the idea of brining together barious individual pieces that didn't fit in anywhere else in a collection of Albumblätter that was published in December of the same year. It is a bright bouquet of poetic little piano pieces of moderate technical difficulty: there can be no comparsion with grand works such as his G minor piano sonata of Carnaval. These musical aphorisms were not intended for the concert hall, though, but for domestic music making: this is chamber music in the true sense of the term. After unpleasant wrangling that even involved going to court to obtain permission to marry Clara Wieck, there followed a time of intense productivity for Robert Schumann: 1840 was his year of songs and 1841 his year of symphonies. Their marriage, which eventually took place against the wishes of Schumann's father-in-law, and the birth of their first child on 1 September 1841 contributed much to his personal happiness. It was for Marie that the hyppy father now composed this Slumber Song, which has enjoyed great popularity ever since: a simple and tender lullaby, written by the father as a surprise ´gift. This lullgy lends itself very well to being performed on a melodic instrument with piano accompaniment, as in thes edition for violin.

Away in a Manger

Away in a Manger is a popular Christmas song published originally sometime in the later 19th century and performed throughout the world. In England, it is considered one of the two most popular carols of all time; a 1996 poll ranked it as a tie for second place. To begin with, many thought it was written by Martin Luther, but now the song is considered to be absolutely American. The most common musical arrangements are by William Kirkpatrick (1895) and James R. Murray (1887). The melody was first published, as Luther's Cradle Hymn, by James R. Murray. Then, came a confusing series of explanations about how Martin Luther wrote the song. Murray even went so far as to suggest that Luther wrote it for his children. As a result, the song has become known as simply Mueller. Nobody knows who this Mueller actually is, but the name stuck.

Popularity

By the 1880’s the cradle song was being performed in church. By the 1990’s the song was becoming the most popular Christmas song of all time. It was sung in school, in church, and at home by nearly everyone.

Other musical settings

The first musical setting published with the lyrics appeared in the Little Children's Book for Schools and Families (1885). The title was Away in a Manger. This edition is the first one not to attribute the song to Martin Luther. Charles H. Gabriel was the first arranger to present the third verse. He also composed and published a large number of different arrangements of the song. In one of his settings, he supplies a chorus for each verse with asleep sung in canon. Another prevalent accompaniment uses the lyrics to an old Normandy carol. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions of this product at www.jamesguthrie.com

Composed by Aaryn S. Ricucci-Hill. 21st Century,Classical. 26 pages. Abundant Silence #820608. Published by Abundant Silence (A0.1224504).

In 2022 I was commissioned to write a piece which would accompany a proposal submitted to the College Music Society conference in Boise, ID. Part of the proposal suggested music that celebrated the rich musical heritage of the Northwest. In looking around at what that meant, I discovered a curious fact about Boise: it has the only Basque heritage museum in the country. Suddenly the wheels got to turning!

Basquing (2022) seeks to invoke... bask, if one will, in the sounds and feelings of another time and place. The inspiration of the piece comes from the Basque region of France with quotations from folksong, fiddle music, and a general vibe of French impressionism.

The piece opens with the folksong Atzo Goizean, the lyrics to which invoke the folksy elements of village living (talking about waking to the thrush’s song, fathers arranging marriages, etc.). The urge to ‘word paint’ the folk song with it references to thrushes and partridges, is tempting, but the urge was avoided in this case, instead opting for a general “vibeâ€, or feeling. The next section avoids quotation altogether, instead opting to steep into the mystique environment created before. The last major portion of the piece utilizes what was billed (to me at least) as a Basque fiddle tune (the title lost as it seems the scholarly research on the subject and tunes that comprise the genre are lacking even by those who claim to have some knowledge of it). Assuming the best, however, the fiddle tune quoted in Basquing is meant to be a musical representation of familial resemblance to the fiddle music of the Pacific Northwest and how folk music of all varieties is at one time so specific yet at the same time broad in its understanding across cultures.

Commissioned in 2022 by Arthur Houle (pianist) and Joung Hoon Song (violinist) for the Pacific Northwest College Music Society Conference 2023 in Boise, ID and premiered at said conference on March 17th, 2023.
