The macro-structure of this single-movement work is cast in a modified sonata form. The exposition presents two contrasting themes, followed by the development of this material, and a recapitulation, which returns to thematic contents of the exposition. The modification of traditional sonata form lies in the recapitulation of the themes in reversed order. This reversal allows for the formation of an arch structure, where the climax is achieved in the middle of the work, rather than at the end. The recapitulation is truncated, as it restates the thematic material of the beginning in a more fragmented, referential and disintegrated form. Generally, the musical language is grounded in extended tonality, which serves as a platform for the organic treatment small musical units.

His musical journey began under the guidance of his father, Lajos Vecsey, but it was his subsequent studies with renowned violinist Jenő Hubay that truly shaped his virtuosity. At the tender age of 10, he impressed none other than Joseph Joachim with his exceptional skills, solidifying his status as a child prodigy.However, in the 1930s, tragedy struck. Just as Vecsey was poised to fulfill his dreams, he fell gravely ill with a pulmonary embolism, a condition that plagued him throughout his life. Seeking medical treatment, he traveled to Rome, where he underwent surgery in the hope of a recovery. Unfortunately, the operation proved unsuccessful, and at the tragically young age of 42, Franz de Vecsey succumbed to his illness.His piece, Valse Triste in C minor, composed in 1913 and dedicated to Princesse Elena Lante della Rovere, serves as a poignant reminder of Vecsey's musical genius. Through its haunting melodies and evocative harmonies, the composition encapsulates the depth of his emotions and the profound beauty of his art. It is dedicated to - and premiered by - Robert Hausmann, who had requested a cello piece from Bruch. The work is styled as an ‘Adagio on 2 Hebrew Melodies’. The first theme, which gives the work its title, imitates the voice of the cantor who chants the liturgy during the evening service on every Yom Kippur. The second theme is derived from English composer Isaac Nathan’s arrangement of Byron’s O weep for Those that Wept on Babel’s Stream and is given a more Schumannesque treatment in the tonic major key.Although originally scored for full orchestra, the work is frequently and effectively performed with piano accompaniment. The violin is ideally suited to the solo line and this makes an excellent recital piece.

When I removed the important lyrics from Feast of Love in order to make an accompanied instrumental solo I needed to convey the passionate drama just in the music. I changed a simple strophic form into an ABA Coda with every verse getting a different treatment. My harmony is much richer and more varied than the original. I added new articulations, dynamics, and other markings as well as a cadenza for one of the bridges.  Excellent piece for a student to learn Romantic characteristics of expression, phrase shaping, and sempre rubato.  This song is also excellent for Weddings. Alternative translations of the title are Celebration of Love and Love's Fire. You can definitely feel the fire and passion in this beautiful piece!This arrangement is not difficult to play, but is marked Early Intermediate because it requires musicianship to play well.3 minutes4 pages score, 2 page solo partTemporary recording of piano reduction of full score.
