The first one was written back when I was a student at the New England Conservatory of Music. It was my opus 3, The Sensuous Gargoyle (1975). My next one was a four-movement work entitled Tunesmith … An American Beauty Pageant (1993). It was commissioned by the Music Department at Lehigh University and premiered by two of its faculty members, Paul Chou and Paul Salerni. The violin has always been my favorite instrument. I have written twelve string quartets. For the violinist extraordinaire Irina Muresanu I wrote a big violin concerto in 2009, and a Partita for solo violin in 2011. I am slated to write another concerto, albeit a chamber one, for the Boston Classical Orchestra and violinist Sharon Roffman for a premiere in the fall of 2013. Last year I decided to write a third duo for violin and piano. I wanted to do something substantial and grandiose, hence the title Grand Duo, opus 151. Both Schubert and Lou Harrison have written works with the same title. So I thought, why not? The work is in five movements. 1. Misterioso … 2. Andante … 3. Allegro … Trio! 4. Largo … 5. Program note: I first met Minami Yoshida when I hired her and her colleagues in the Nico Quartet for a recording session of my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) in the Eben Jordan Studio at the New England Conservatory of Music and then I heard her at an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall. Both events were in the spring of 2019 and she and the quartet were fantastic. I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO. They recorded it for me @ NEC in the fall and I love the recording. The next thing I did was to offer to Minami to write a violin sonata for her. She was thrilled with the idea. I decided to call it Mi-la-mi, after her name; the first three notes in the violin for this work are: E - A - E.   Mi-la-mi (2020) is in four movements. 1. Moderato, TRIO, Allegro vivace 2. I thought I should try my hand at incorporating CPE's style into TOLmusic. Why not??? This will be my fifth sonata for violin and piano. The work is in seven movements. NB: I accidentally found some enigmatic titles in CPE's Petites Pièces per il Cembalo Solo. These are so amusing and funny compared to the usual Adagio, Allegro,Presto, etc. I see as titles in CPE's music that I decided to steal a few of them for my own work. I. La Stahl ... Largo II.
