Music and song composed by me about Borderline

♫ * ´¨` * • .¸¸. ♫ Cassandra's vision ♫ * ´¨` * • .¸¸. ♫

I don't want to open that door, I shouldn't ... but it's the wind that brings me ...

And I sing in a low voice, Until the pain passes

and turn, turn-round, how bad the world is

Between thoughts and tears, words and music

There is Cassandra's vision

And I don't know if he can do it, to write about you, you left quickly,

And you're perfect in my mind

Cassandra is locked up in that room,

He hugs himself, tells an existence:

Look there, my father and his glass, look at me, the victim of drinking

purple bruises, always alone at school, violence continues in indifference,

my mother knew but hid everything, the mind that does not hold, and the borderline destroys

the spark that was in me, all those dreams of mine and that love that I will never have,

I would like to run away but I am chained here, uncontrolled rituals, repeated gestures

and a monster closed inside me

In Cassandra's vision, she no longer has bars in this room

no longer has a body, sex, it is ageless

It's a vision but she doesn't know it

In harmony with creation, forget the present and the past

And the pain comes up and will disappear, It's a vision but she doesn't know it

Cassandra does not know, who is about to lose our reality

Worn threads Of a fragile puppet

He hangs in the balance, embraces a nightmare

In his labyrinths, he never finds a way out

And pass the margin, cross that limit

You feel a flower that Needs no longer has

And the wind will follow

In front of the mirror, The long hair, Reflect flashes of a thousand crystals

You comb them slowly ,, With infinite care, You have been waiting for your love for a lifetime

And a carillon that resounds far away, The brush suddenly falls from your hand

Because the black man is here, he is already back, He breaks your dream, the charm is broken

Cassandra runs among the stars and tattooes them on her skin

Bruises and scars no longer has, It's a vision but she doesn't know it

In dimensions to explore, How birds can fly

Breathe sun, love and freedom And no one will harm you here ...

Cassandra stop, Cassandra help me not to regret you

Now you can't chain me to you, to your memory that will burn forever

Cassandra doesn't know that wings don't, she doesn't

Tragic angel who takes flight and then

A puppet with broken threads now

And time stands still here, like your beat

But the vision is mine or Cassandra's, I don't remember anymore,

This time changes my perception of the past

Faces and names that Time has faded by now

And I dance to the ticking of what has been

lost souls who are left behind

always inside me with their story

an eternal tattoo in my memory

I shouldn't open that door, I don't want to, but it's the wind that brings me….

and I sing in a low voice until the pain passes

and round, round-round how bad the world is ... ..

tune – QUAM DILECTA

based on Habakkuk 2:19-20

 I Surrender All

lyrics - Judson W. VanDeVenter 1896

melody - Winfield S. Weeden 1896

The context of the song The LORD is in His Holy Temple is often overlooked in singing this song. Worship in the OT is a rather noisy affair with instruments, singing, shouting, dancing, and public praise. In the Old Testament, quiet in the Temple of God is an ominous, frightening thing, because God’s judgment is to be pronounced! I Surrender All is paired here with The LORD is in His Holy Temple thinking back to Isaiah 6 where Isaiah’s reaction to encountering the presence of God is surrender to Him. Yielding to God is, not only the prerequisite for avoiding God’s judgment, it is the path to peace and joy.

Without the doublestops of the violin part, the wind parts may not seem very challenging at first sight, but to play a beautiful legato with a full tone at piano and pianissimo (slowly, too) is much harder than it sounds. The phrasing and the intensity of the music is critical to the message of the piece. It will take considerable attention between the soloist and the pianist to communicate the moody rubato basic to the best performance of the arrangement.

Composed by Cecile Chaminade. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Romantic Period,Standards. 9 pages. Phil Beaman #3408933. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844472).

Cecile Louise Chaminade (1857-1944) was a French Romantic composer and pianist. She is often overlooked as a musician yet she was the first female composer to win the Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur, France's highest award.
In 1890 she wrote a piano piece whimsically titled La Lisonjera (The Flatterer). It is a great example of late Romantic writing for the masses with an eye to publishing.   She is lyrical, expressive, and emotional; using dynamics, wider note ranges, and chromaticism. It exhibits her trademark of being 'passionate yet virtuosic'.
I have arranged La Lisonjera for Violin and Piano, keeping all of the traditional Romantic characteristics intact. I have added greater contrast between the themes, making the A theme appassionata, and reserving her molto capriccioso for the B theme which I also slow down a bit to allow for more playfulness. It is my own interpretation of articulation and simplified virtuosic passages. The accompaniment is my own reduction to allow the solo to shine freely.
The arrangement is still marked as Advanced Intermediate because I have kept it in the original Key of Gb (6 flats) which I believe adds to the character of the piece. Also because in the capriccioso section I have constant, and rapid, alternation between pizzicato and arco. (MIDI recording does note reproduce pizzicato.)
This arrangement is perfect for Recital and Repertoire as a performance of the 'overheated emotions' of the late Romantic era. Enough virtuosity to show the violinist's technique. Accessible and enjoyable for all audiences.

An arrangement of the Suzuki Book 4 Vivaldi a minor first movement for two violins. The second violin part was improvised out of necessity because I (the teacher) am not proficient at playing the orchestral reduction out of the accompaniment book.  This duet stands alone but I have included an optional piano part and an optional cello part (piano LH). This arrangement has been performed very successfully both as a duet and with the optional piano and cello.  Honestly? I am not sure if my arrangement is anything like Vivaldi's backup but I hope he'd be flattered. I have a lot of repertoire that I have bastardized with my teacher violin improvs and I will be releasing these as my Do It As a Duet series.  I hope you and your students enjoy this piece!

After being locked down by Covid, I had almost lost the will to live, let alone go on holiday again outside the UK. Two years before I had had a lovely time in Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Puccini's House, Florence, Sienna, and more. Almost at the end of the trip I stayed a couple of days with my dear musical friends in Perugia, where their then 8-year-old daughter, Martha, was making great strides forward on the violin (mum is a concert pianist and teacher, similarly dad, but on the clarinet. I had booked to stay in Cesena where they had moved two, and I had a lovely time here, two, adding Bologna, Rossini's Museum, Rimini and some of the Adriatic coast to my list of places visited. They, too, had had lockdowns, and cancellations, but quite by chance, the weekend I had planned to be in Cesena, was the rearranged date of a special outside concert in the imposing surroundings of Rocca Malatestiana, a medieval fortress than dominates the town. Martha was going to be performing a violin concerto by Rode, and her dad had adapted the orchestral accompaniment, so that the large clarinet ensemble could take its place on the night. It was a wonderful, moving evening, and Martha played so well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house! When I knew I was visiting them this year, I wrote Martha a little fun piece, with piano accompaniment, that she might have been able to play while I was there. But because of the rescheduled concerto performance, there just wasn't enough time for her to learn and practise the piece with her violin teacher in Bologna. I even added an optional part for clarinet, so dad would not feel left out. Hopefully, one day, I might still hear Waltz for Martha played by its dedicatees! It's a kind of schmalzy Viennese Waltz, in the style of Kreisler and others! You can purchase the piano score and violin part here. The optional clarinet part is available FREE OF CHARGE - by emailing info@philiprbuttall.co.uk.

About The Destruction of a Twinkling Star

This piece is written for Violin and Piano.

Ever wondered what happen to a star when it explodes? I decided to write a short fantasia about this phenomenon. I decided to use the very famous opening of the Mozart’s Ah vous dirai-je maman Variations for this piece. A very sweet sounding opening to a devastated effect. I have decided to use a pretty unconventional notation. I think a star is full of mystery, and you always get surprises when you improvise. In my music, I like to try new things! And of course, despite new things, I will always use back my own prestige extracts from some of my works. I have used an almost similar notation in my Sky 2 for piano solo, and the last movement of the Six Improvisatory Pieces for solo piano. The interval between the highest and the lowest pitch of the Mozart’s Variations is a Major 6th. To get the intended transcription into my work, I cut the keyboard into 6 different ranges. Because the range of the violin is not as big as the piano, I cut the violin into 3 different ranges. If want will to realize, Mozart uses all 6 notes of the opening C major scale, and hence, I transcribe it into chord clusters into my work.

The Destruction of a Twinkling Star is dedicated to my friends Miss Lee Xin Yee and Mr Kelvin Koh.

Composed by Frederic Chopin. Arranged by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo. Romantic Period. 7 pages. Nicole Elyse DiPaolo #3123257. Published by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo (A0.799603).

This is my own arrangement of one of my favorite Chopin waltzes for the piano. As the Duo del Mare, violinist Amy Schlicher and I performed this arrangement aboard the ms Zaandam cruise liner, where it proved very popular. Because Amy and I did not have extra time or venues in which to rehearse, I intentionally made this arrangement very accessible (so that we could play it well without rehearsal or an intermediate-level duo could master it with some practice). This waltz would make a great encore or showpiece on your next program.

About the Arranger:

Praised as a sensitive pianist and outstanding accompanist who delivers powerful interpretations, Nicole Elyse DiPaolo is a versatile pianist, composer, and scholar currently based in Bloomington, Indiana. She holds a B.Mus in Music Theory from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she studied piano under Michele Cooker and Louis Nagel; she also studied composition with Bright Sheng and basso continuo/harpsichord accompaniment with Edward Parmentier. In 2006 and 2007, Nicole appeared as a concerto soloist with the Ambassador Chamber Players, featuring works of J. S. Bach and Mozart alongside two performances of her own Piano Trio in C minor. Following her graduation from Michigan, Nicole completed an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she has recently become a PhD candidate in the same field; her dissertation research will explore relationships between selected early partimenti (instructional sketches used by Italian composition teachers) and George Frideric Handel’s compositional techniques.

Currently, Nicole is a sought-after private instructor of piano, music theory, and composition on the IU campus, where she is also an active mostly-vocal accompanist. Nicole continues to enjoy musical partnerships with students of nearly every current IU voice department faculty member (and she unashamedly absorbs and borrows teaching/coaching/performing tips from all these professors). In addition, she has taken French and German diction courses with Prof. Gary Arvin.

Notable recent engagements include the 2016 and 2017 National Society of Arts and Letters Vocal Competitions (multiple entrants); the Opera Night at North benefit concert with students of IU's top-ranked opera program (among them Accidental Tenor Andrew Lunsford); and two long-term cruise ship performing contracts with violinist Amy Schlicher as the Duo del Mare.

When not working on one of her many concurrent musical projects, Nicole might be found maintaining The Collaborative Pianists’ Community on Facebook, cuddling the nearest dog, looking for opportunities to maintain her Spanish and Italian language skills, and raising and releasing monarch butterflies. Composed by Pietro Mascagni. Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Classical,Easter,Film/TV,Opera,Romantic Period. 8 pages. RBMusic #904730. Published by RBMusic (A0.1315952).

In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.

Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.

Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come.

The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame.

The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.

Composed by Robert Franz. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. 6 pages. Phil Beaman #3516899. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844543).

Robert Franz was a Romantic Era composer of lieder (German Art Song) whose pieces were highly praised by Schumann. When I removed the important lyrics from Feast of Love in order to make an accompanied instrumental solo I needed to convey the passionate drama just in the music. I changed a simple strophic form into an ABA Coda with every verse getting a different treatment. My harmony is much richer and more varied than the original. I added new articulations, dynamics, and other markings as well as a cadenza for one of the bridges.
Excellent piece for a student to learn Romantic characteristics of expression, phrase shaping, and sempre rubato.
This song is also excellent for Weddings. Alternative translations of the title are Celebration of Love and Love's Fire. You can definitely feel the fire and passion in this beautiful piece!
This arrangement is not difficult to play, but is marked Early Intermediate because it requires musicianship to play well.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Holiday,Standards,Wedding. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3468006. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549216).

J. S. Bach BWV 508.

Bist du bei mir

Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.

Source

Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.

Lyrics

When thou art near, I go with joy
To death and to my rest.
O how joyous would my end be,
If your fair hands
            Would close my faithful eyes.
- Unknown

Bach Overview

First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio.

 History

Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.

 Style

It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top.

Revival

Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.

 Voyager

NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.
