Let this be your Elementary String Orchestra's first foray into the musical idiom of Swing! Coming of age in the 1940's, swing music was the most popular genre among America's teenagers, twenty-somethings, and those who were young at heart! They couldn't stop dancing when the orchestras of the time launched into one of these numbers! Written in 2/4 time, Swing'n' in Two is a lighthearted glimpse for your youngsters into the pop music of yesteryear. This chart has three part harmony, as the second violin and viola play the same part as do the cello and string bass. Your first violin is on his or her own! And take the tempo up , once they master it!

SKU: A0.1112894

Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Chamber,Christian,Classical,Instructional,Religious. 44 pages. Regis Bookshar #714847. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.1112894).

Recordare (from Requiem (K. 626) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Franz Xaver Sussmayr - String Orchestra - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a String Orchestra, consisting of 3 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Violoncellos and 1 Double Bass, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (44 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a String Orchestra, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. There are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may fine something else which may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of Mozart's Recordare, will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

SKU: A0.886139

Composed by Jason McChristian. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 29 pages. Jason Gary McChristian #2937867. Published by Jason Gary McChristian (A0.886139).

The Great Blue Heron was inspired by the relatively large, wading bird, commonly found in North and Central America. The name of this bird has always conjured in me an image of something of such immense size and, yet, unbelievable beauty and wonder. Something bsoth terrifying and awe-inspiring.

Musically speaking, this work is an arabesque, a short, single movement containing ornamentation. This term is also in art to describe works that contain two flowing, decorative motifs in the shape of S and U. In ballet, it is used to describe the shape and movement of a spiral. The gestures of this work follow the contour of these shapes and movements and embody the arabesque in all of these forms.

By Lee Greenwood. By Austin Roberts and Kerry Chater. Arranged by Jon Thingvall. Country. Score and parts. 10 pages. Jon Thingvall #4742269. Published by Jon Thingvall (A0.954489).

Time: 5 min

This piece contains the following:  double stops; triple-, and quadruple-stop broken chords, septuplet octave runs, sul tasto, and solo passages for each instrument.

The YouTube video scrolls through the score, so, before you purchase it, you can get a great idea of how suitable this piece would be for your ensemble.

In this arrangement, while borrowing something old (sotto voce quotes from Pachelbel's famous Canon in D (here in G)), the something new 80s Pop/Country sound blends with the classical into a timeless tapestry. I've always thought of this classic by Lee Greenwood as the perfect song for a wedding or an anniversary, but, in reality, its lyrics are so grateful and sincere that it could just as well grace a birthday, a memorial, or any other sentimental, friendly gathering.

Due to unforeseeable technical problems, parts do not always print to PDF correctly, so please let me know of any problems with printed parts, and I can send you an updated version.  My e-mail is klazzkeys@aol.com

SKU: A0.533700

Composed by Carson Cooman. Baroque,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 38 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038895. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533700).

Concerto for Portatif Organ and Strings (2006) was commissioned by the Harvard
Baroque Chamber Orchestra and its director, Robert Mealy. The work is dedicated
to organist Nancy Granert, for whom the solo part was written. The work was
commissioned in celebration of the von Clemm Chamber Organ at The Memorial
Church, Harvard University, built in 2006 by Klop Organ Builders.
As with many of my works, relationships between old and new musical concepts are
explored. In this piece, musical aspects of the Baroque organ concerto tradition
(and Baroque style string playing) co-exist with more contemporary musical
elements. In particular, the directness of expression found in many Baroque
concertante works is present throughout. Musical material is shared between the
movements in a motivic fashion.
The title of the first movement, Bricolage, is defined as “something made or put
together using whatever materials happen to be available.†Thus, the musical
material for the movement is of varying characters; these elements are assembled
together in ways that allow them to comment on and inform each other. Some of
these musical elements include: a traditional “overture†texture, a Basse de
Trompette texture (with an organ reed stop in the left hand) common in French
Baroque organ music, and the French keyboard toccata style.
The second movement, Elegia, is dark and searching in tone. It begins with a
rageful roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material – a simple
“lament†theme in a folk-inflected style. This material is used for further explorations,
building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this time
with a whisper. The movement winds down to a sad conclusion.
After the soul-searching of the second movement, the third movement, Rondeau, is
sprightly and energetic. The basic material is a set of Baroque and Classical-style
figurations (with a few American gospel inflections thrown in), firmly grounded in G
major. After minor diversions, the original material continues to return and ends the
work with unfettered joy.

This item is the score only.  The score and complete parts are available for sale as another item.

About Pick-A-Part Arrangement

This arrangement system employs simultaneous, multi-level difficulty parts for each string section. The goal is to accommodate all levels of playing in the preparation and performance of a symphonic masterwork.

In this arrangement, there are 3 difficulty levels for each individual string section, labeled A, B, and C, respectively. Each level is a decreasing level of technical and musical difficulty, level A being the highest level of difficulty. The A level is close to, if not exactly the same as, the original string part, plus the integration of wind parts when applicable. B and C follow in a proportional reduction of difficulty level.

For this solution to be most effective, some students should be encouraged to play the most challenging parts simultaneously with those playing the simpler parts. This presents the opportunity to participate in a performance that includes most of the original material. The B and C parts cover enough of the surface material while maintaining a modicum of independence from the A part. In other words, the B and C parts are able to hold their own in performance without the A parts.

For example, let’s say you have a couple of talented violinists and a few more that are well below their playing level, only two violists that need a great deal of help, a plethora of cellists with a wide range of abilities, and one single bass player that is a beginner. Your distribution of parts may look something like this:

    • Violin 1 - two on Violin 1A, one on Violin 1C, and the rest on Violin 1B
    • Violin 2 - one on Violin 2B, the rest on Violin 2C
    • Viola - both on Viola C
    • Cello - three on Cello A, one on Cello B, and the rest on Cello C
    • Bass - one on Bass C

This potential setup will challenge each player at their current level of development while creating the context for a moving experience with a major orchestral work.

A Note about the Score and Printing

The full score is designed to be printed in portrait orientation on 17x11 tabloid size paper. Even at this size, the score can be confusing to read, especially if you are not covering every difficulty level part. Surrender The Sword (score – violin and string orchestra) MO136A

Score (parts available)

Music by Mark O’Connor

24 pages - 9:30 minutes in length

Surrender The Sword for violin and string orchestra was composed and orchestrated by Mark O’Connor and used as one of the themes for the critically acclaimed PBS documentary, Liberty! The American Revolution. On the companion recording Liberty!, album notes author Thomas Fleming writes, ...something remarkable was taking shape in his imagination – sounds more extraordinary than he had ever experienced. On a trip to Key West, he visited Ernest Hemingway’s house. In the sundrenched garden, music leapt into O’Connor’s mind and in a breathtaking two hours, Surrender the Sword – and its orchestral outline – was on paper. It is unquestionably one of the most passionate orchestral pieces he has ever written. In the A part, the music is busy. You can imagine voices, perhaps in Congress, perhaps in a crowd in New York or Philadelphia, wondering what is going to happen next, as General George Washington is about to resign as commander-in-chief of the American army, O’Connor says. Then comes a long melodic arc, swelling with a triumphant confidence that depicts the great military leader extending his sword to surrender it forever. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

SKU: A0.719773

Composed by Many. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Renaissance. Score and parts. 60 pages. Curtis Hanson #6258371. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719773).

Hey string players and teachers, are you looking for something different to program or teach your students? This collection of pieces, suitable for beginning and experienced ensembles, may be what you’re looking for.

For the choral musician, the secular music of the 16th and early 17th centuries comprise some of the most delightful works of early repertoire. The madrigals, lieder, and chansons in this collection are arranged for string quartet and quintet. The intent of these arrangements is to enable the instrumental musician an opportunity to experience a genre perhaps less familiar, with its varying degrees of rhythmic complexity and the juxtaposed interplay of duple and triple rhythmic figures. In keeping with the period, no dynamics are indicated, and articulations are kept at a minimum. Traditionally, repeated sections are to be played at a softer dynamic, but nothing is written in stone. For the up-tempo piece, as many are, rhythmic cleanliness and clarity are paramount, particularly in the iconic Fa-la-la sections. Accordingly, although they may be warranted, no slurs are given. Occasional staccatos are suggested for crispness. Vocal breath marks (') above the staff are meant to serve as guides in phrasing only, and tempos are only suggestions. As non-sacred works, they are generally not meant as 'serious' music, but rather as the music of the common people. Bottom line, they are meant to be fun, and the performer is free to interpret as desired. This collection is a companion to the arranger’s series of Renaissance Motets Arranged for Strings.

With the purchase of this collection, permission is granted to photocopy parts as needed. The audio example is of the first few pieces in the collection.

Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann. Arranged by Kyle VanArsdalen. Baroque,Standards. Score and parts. 33 pages. Kyle VanArsdalen Music #6479569. Published by Kyle VanArsdalen Music (A0.895608).

This arrangement of Telemann's Concerto in D Major for 4 Violins is written so that it can be performed by a String Orchestra or a String Quartet. This is possible because the Cello and Bass parts are doubled. The 3rd Violin part is optional and can serve two purposes: (1) To add more instruments to the viola section, if your orchestra has a small number of violists, to balance the parts in the ensemble, and (2) to provide more options for performing it as a String Quartet. Possibilities include:

2 Violins, Viola, Cello;      2 Violins, Viola, Bass;      3 Violins, Cello;      3 Violins, Bass

This kind of flexibility of ensemble, along with the fact that every part gets to play something interesting, makes this an ideal arrangement for educators.

This download includes the score and all of the parts (Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 (treble viola), Viola, Cello, & Bass). It is also the entire concerto, which is 4 movements (I. Adagio, II. Allegro, III. Grave, IV. Allegro).

This song works shockingly well for orchestra - and everyone gets something fun to play. I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original - listen to it with your students to help them feel the tricky spots. You need a strong bass laying down the harmonic foundation throughout for this to work, cello is not doubling. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a fun challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some fun techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. There is an optional cut to remove the bridge if the piece is too much/too long for your group. This piece is a blast to play and I hope your students enjoy it!
