The following text tells the story of the music, and was included in the original publication:At night, in the depths of the Great North Woods, we sit by the blazing camp-fire and hear the legend of the Indian maiden who to save her people offers herself as a living sacrifice to the Great Spirit. On the rushing waters she embarks in her canoe, and standing erect and fearless is whirled along faster and faster until she plunges to her death over mighty Niagara. At this point in the story, the fire mysteriously leaps up, then as quickly dies down, and the thick velvety darkness of the forest again wraps us in its pall.This arrangement for string orchestra can be performed with or without double bass, but all of the other parts divide for much of the piece, so a minimum of 8 players are required. The total running time is approx. 5 minutes, making it a short but entertaining addition to any programme.This arrangement was first performed by the String Orchestra of the Lancaster Community Music Centre, Lancashire, UK.

Found in several late-16th-century and early 17th-century sources and preserved at the University of Cambridge. Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the tune from as early as 1686. The tune is contained in several of Dowland’s lute manuscripts; in William Ballet’s Lute Book; in Sir John Hawkins’ transcripts of virginal music; in The Dancing Master; The Beggar’s Opera; and in many other books.  The earliest known source of the tune -Trinity College, Dublin ms. D. I.21, c. 1580 - known as William Ballet's lute book- gives the tune in the melodic minor scale.  Greensleeves is also often played in a natural minor scale and in the Dorian Mode.  This arrangement is inspired on the transcripts of virginal music from Sir John Hawkins’. The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. It can be used in concerts and all sorts of spiritual or religious events. Thank you very much for taking your time to read this text and to listen to the file. It looks deceptively simple but the learning and challenge comes from two smaller sub-ensembles playing together in their own collective units legato con moto while playing together as a whole music ensemble Everyone will enjoy and bathe in the beautiful harmonies that will resonate when the entire music ensemble begins to listen to each while playing together as a group. Your musicians will hone their skills in playing together with just the right balance that this song requires. Your musicians will also hone their skills for subdividing and maintaining an inner beat that is in sync with your conducting because there is no percussion and the notes are freely flowing on and off the down beat yet not sounding heavily syncopated when performed. This particular was created and produced after the Songs from My Soul album was sent for distribution. So, this song has yet to be officially released. All five movements will be released as an album Mourning in the Rain. This 5th movement Onward and Upward has a decisive emotional resolution and conviction in its pathos. The dynamics reflect accordingly ranging from mf to fff indicative of overcoming adversity and grief. Sweet Suzanne - p. 37 Strings & Threads Suite for violin and string orchestra is a piece comprising thirteen tunes composed by Mark O’Connor. In 1986, the Tennessee Dance Theater commissioned the Suite to be performed at Nashville’s Summer Lights Festival. A few years later Edgar Meyer provided the beautiful string orchestra arrangement that is contained in this score. The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological order O’Connor says, not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own family’s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the family’s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually West during WWI nearly 300 hundred years later. O’Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, perhaps similar to the music O’Connor’s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, he reveals music they must have encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected – possessing a common thread – from an Irish reel to jazz.
