This arrangement by Matthew C. Weiss of Dvorak's timeless classic is in the key of D Major so that violin kids in Suzuki book 3 can be the soloists. The orchestra part is relatively straightforward but is by no means watered down. In fact, the middle section is especially dramatic using tremolos and the viola and cello parts are quite good, though not overly difficult.

Even though this arrangement is especially designed to accompany violin soloists, any instrument comfortable in the key of D major can play the solo line. Enjoy!

We're sure that this new arrangement of the famous New Zealand Sea Shanty will be enjoyed by string players of all levels. As with all Pick n' Mix arrangements, there are multiple part options to suit all playing levels- whether advanced players, complete beginners and all those in-between. 

The melodic interest of the Verses is passed between instrument sections and develops musically throughout the arrangement, whilst the catchy, repeated Chorus section provides a great hook for everyone to join together throughout the piece. 

The concept of all Pick 'n' Mix Strings arrangements is that you just choose the parts which are most suited to your players. We are absolutely NOT suggesting that you try to cover every single possible part! If you don't have any players on the more advanced parts, this doesn't matter at all. Alternatively, experienced ensembles might want all players on advanced parts. You may well use a mixture of some advanced parts and other simpler parts- or you could even have a very early beginner ensemble just using the parts for open strings and first fingers, with a teacher playing the main tune on piano for instance. 

In addition to the regular score and parts, there are also optional versions of each part with the: STRING FINGERING written in; LETTER NAMES written in; an EXTENSION SCORE; a REDUCED SCORE; an optional PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT and an optional PIANO REDUCTION. There are tried and tested suggested BOWINGS included in all string parts. However, should any music directors wish to use alternative bowings to those printed, we can happily provide versions of the score and parts without bowing on request. There are also Play Along videos available on YouTube @PicknMixStrings for all the Open String parts, in case these are helpful for practising along with!

This new arrangement of the much-loved traditional fiddle tune is a little gem and would be a great addition to the repertoire of any school or youth string ensemble. Orchestraining is a cycle of orchestral studies, each focusing on different aspects of performance. These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.

In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.

I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.

The sixth etude focuses on the difficult subject of harmonics in the strings. In the classical repertorire, harmonics are not so present as other orchestral colors. There fore, it is particularly difficult to find repertory to train them.

Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words is collection of short piano pieces.  I chose four of these that seemed orchestral In character, and arranged them for chamber orchestra (strings, piano, and seven winds).  While arranging is often an exercise in reducing music originally written for a large ensemble, the challenge here was to expand Mendelssohn's piano miniatures into music for a chamber orchestra that sounds as it were written specifically for that ensemble.  Level: advanced intermediate.  Duration: 8 minutes, 50 seconds.
