The Barnyards O’Delgaty is one of the most famous ‘Bothy Ballads’ (a song sung by farm labourers in the northeast region of Scotland). The farm of Barnyards is on the Delgaty estate a mile north east of Turriff. The melody is derived from an old Lowland love song called ‘Linton Lowrie’ by Alexander MacKenzie and James Ballantine thought to have bee composed early in the 20th Century. A reference to ‘Linton Lowrie’ can be found in the chorus: Linten adie, tooren adie,Linten adie, tooren ay,inten lowerin lowerin lowerin,The Barnyards o Delgaty. This lively arrangement by Kate Agioritis traverses a range of keys, and provides each player with an opportunity to showcase the playful melody. The following text tells the story of the music, and was included in the original publication:At night, in the depths of the Great North Woods, we sit by the blazing camp-fire and hear the legend of the Indian maiden who to save her people offers herself as a living sacrifice to the Great Spirit. On the rushing waters she embarks in her canoe, and standing erect and fearless is whirled along faster and faster until she plunges to her death over mighty Niagara. At this point in the story, the fire mysteriously leaps up, then as quickly dies down, and the thick velvety darkness of the forest again wraps us in its pall.This arrangement for string orchestra can be performed with or without double bass, but all of the other parts divide for much of the piece, so a minimum of 8 players are required. The Call of the Sea is a challenging, and energetic work that is engaging for all of the sections of the orchestra. While not specifically programmatic, the piece is meant to evoke a vague sense of the sea and its tumultuous nature. For fingering and position markings, the following system has been employed: dashes indicate shifts, numbers indicate suggested fingerings, and roman numerals indicate suggested positions.
