This piece is one of ten pieces written for this book.  It is a great piece for young players as there is a third violin and piano included in the
arrangement.  In addition, there are warmup scales and exercises pertaining to the piece.  A great piece for young musicians.

A Great Big Boo in 3 is one piece from the violin book A Scampering Scarecrow.These pieces were originally written
for solo violin but now have been re-arranged for string orchestra.  The score is written for both Third Violin and pianol.
The third violin is helpful for those students who are new to stringed instruments.  I have found in the past that a student 
will start on the third violin part but transfers to second violin as a result of the experience with third violin.
     This is an entertaining piece for all members of the orchestra.

WISTFALLEN was originally composed as a violin and piano duo birthday present for my son and was intended for us to perform together. After performing the work several times, I thought the piece would provide an interesting and meaningful arrangement for solo violin and string orchestra. It is a beautiful and expressive work for all members of the ensemble providing interesting music for all players. It is a rewarding work for both the developing and advanced player.

Happy memories can often be tinged with a little sadness in the knowing that those moments are gone. Perhaps in this moment, one can be thought of as wistfallen.

Amazing Grace, arranged for String Orchestra by Tim Crooks from the traditional spiritual. This arrangement is loosely based on the version sung by Aretha Franklin, and starts with two soft verses in 4/4, then modulates up a tone and into 9/8, for two bigger verses with a triplet-feel quaver accompaniment. The ending can be big, or quiet, as required. This is a great selection for groups developing in compound time, and suitable for approx ABRSM grade 5 (intermediate) level and above. Tonada del Lamento - When I start to compose this work I was experimenting with modal harmonies. This is a Venezuelan Tonada from the plains in the style of the composer Simón Díaz, my biggest influence. The poem talks about a cowboy who lose his wife and his family and go across the savannah with a big pain in his heart. I include the chords to accompany with the Venezuelan Cuatro (small four-string folk guitar) for a better interpretation. Lyrics are in Spanish. Performance time: c. 4:00 minutes.

C Jam Blues is a jazz standard composed in 1942 by Duke Ellington and performed by countless other musicians, such as Dave Grusin, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, and Charles Mingus, arranged here for String Orchestra.

As the title suggests, the piece follows a twelve-bar blues form in the key of C major. The tune is well known for being extremely easy to play, with the entire melody featuring only two notes: G and C.

A performance typically features several improvised solos. The melody likely originated from the clarinetist Barney Bigard in 1941, but its origin is not perfectly clear.

It was also known as Duke's Place, with lyrics added by Bill Katts, Bob Thiele and Ruth Roberts.

Ellington's black and white film was produced in 1942. The video depicts a jam session where Ellington begins playing with a double bass before gradually being joined by other members of his band, among them drummer Sonny Greer and trumpeter Rex Stewart. The film title is Jam Session. Western Swing band leader Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys recorded the song sometime between 1945 and 1947 as part of the Tiffany Transcriptions. Bill Doggett recorded a version on his 1958 tribute album Salute to Duke Ellington (King). C Jam Blues was used by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band as the basis of their song The Intro and the Outro. Mulgrew Miller and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen included the song in their 1999 album The Duets. RONDO MODERATO is written for a beginning string orchestra where students have 2-3 years of playing experience. I chose to write this piece in a three part harmony so if you are lacking instrumentation this will certainly benefit you and allow your group to sound fuller…the 2nd violin and viola are doubled as are the violincello and contrabass. There can be as little as one player per part or placing numerous players on each part will produce a bigger and fuller sound. Even advanced players will find these pieces fun to play. Complete with full score and parts. Music does not have to be difficult to sound good. If you are looking for something playable and full sounding you found it in this string orchestra series for young players composed by a retired music teacher who actually worked with young players. These compositions contain flowing melodies with unique harmonies, easy key signatures and have generated great audience appeal. Counterpoint is also incorporated into many of the compositions.
