A Great Big Boo in 3 is one piece from the violin book A Scampering Scarecrow.These pieces were originally written
for solo violin but now have been re-arranged for string orchestra.  The score is written for both Third Violin and pianol.
The third violin is helpful for those students who are new to stringed instruments.  I have found in the past that a student 
will start on the third violin part but transfers to second violin as a result of the experience with third violin.
     This is an entertaining piece for all members of the orchestra.

Amazing Grace, arranged for String Orchestra by Tim Crooks from the traditional spiritual. This arrangement is loosely based on the version sung by Aretha Franklin, and starts with two soft verses in 4/4, then modulates up a tone and into 9/8, for two bigger verses with a triplet-feel quaver accompaniment. The ending can be big, or quiet, as required. This is a great selection for groups developing in compound time, and suitable for approx ABRSM grade 5 (intermediate) level and above. There are easy parts for Violin, Viola and Cello at approx Grade 2 level. Tonada del Lamento - When I start to compose this work I was experimenting with modal harmonies. This is a Venezuelan Tonada from the plains in the style of the composer Simón Díaz, my biggest influence. The poem talks about a cowboy who lose his wife and his family and go across the savannah with a big pain in his heart. I include the chords to accompany with the Venezuelan Cuatro (small four-string folk guitar) for a better interpretation. Lyrics are in Spanish. Performance time: c. 4:00 minutes.

An arrangement of Little Brown Jug for String Orchestra & Drum Kit.

Little Brown Jug is a song written in 1869 by Joseph Winner, originally published credited to Eastburn (Winner’s middle name).

It was originally a drinking song. It remained well known as a folk song into the early 20th century. Like many songs which make reference to alcohol, it enjoyed new popularity during the Prohibition era. In 1939, bandleader Glenn Miller recorded and broadcast his swing instrumental arrangement of the tune with great success, and the number became one of the best known orchestrations of the American Big Band era His version did not have the lyrics.

In 1939, Glenn Miller and His Orchestra released a hit version of the song on RCA Bluebird, as an A side 78 single, B-10286-A, in a new arrangement by Bill Finegan backed with Pavanne. The recording was an early chart hit for Glenn Miller. The song was performed in Glenn Miller’s Carnegie Hall concert that year and became a staple of the Glenn Miller Orchestra repertoire and a classic of the Big Band era.

The song was featured in and was central to the plot of the 1953 Universal Pictures film biography The Glenn Miller Story starring James Stewart and June Allyson.

Santa’s Midnight Visit  (Guarrine)

Close your eyes tight and listen for the reindeer and then the big guy himself on the roof,  down the chimney and gets to work with as little noise as possible.  He is quick so you need to listen carefully.  And as fast as he started, you can hear him cross the roof, put his pack back into the sleigh and his reindeer take him to the next house on his rounds. 

3-part string orchestra (opt. piano)  Key of D major, 4/4 time uses notes:D, E, F#, G, A, B. 
All bowing are marked, only dynamics used f and mf.  Grade .5, has half notes, quarter notes and multiple rests.
