THE COVENTRY CAROL is a 16th century Christmas carol and is named after the city of Coventry, England. The carol was traditionally performed in Coventry as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. Written for the elementary level the composition has all instruments in First Position and includes a full score and parts for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello and St. Bass. It is written in A minor and is very playable at this level. This is an approachable arrangement with some third position passage writing in violin 1, viola and cello parts. Perfect for carol services and Christmas performances.

The arrangement also includes an optional easy part for Violin & Viola suitable for ABRSM grade 1-2 level.

Harp and piano parts are included but are optional for performance.

About the arranger

Tim Crooks trained as a violinist and violist, working professionally in Manchester (UK) for many years. He was a founding member of the Manchester String Quartet and scored many arrangements for the group's recordings. Tim now orchestrates and conducts, working with orchestras including Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, RTÃ‰ Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia.

This is a fun piece for an intermediate-level string orchestra. It also has a part for a solo violin, solo cello, jingle bells, and a glockenspiel. It is a mash-up of several traditional Christmas carols, Good King Wenceslas, Jingle Bell, Jolly Ol' St. Nicolas, Deck the Halls, Coventry Carol and We Wish you a Merry Christmas. In the middle of the piece, each string section plays a different melody at the same time. Under all that noise a solo cello will start to play The Coventry Carol and after a while, everyone stops and listens to the cello's melody. Eventually, everyone all joins in playing that tune. And it ends with We Wish You A Merry Christmas. This is a great piece for your Winter Concert.

This is a reaction on the part of the composer to the brash commercialization of Christmas. Christmas is first Christ, Jesus Christ, His humble Birth in a Manger, the quiet tenderness of his Mother Mary and his Father Joseph, the surroundings of people who were prominent in their day but utterly unknown now. It is a reaction to wanting to go back to the Silent Night, the Shepherds Watching the Sheep by Night, etc. The spirit is quiet reverence for Jesus. This is arranged for solo voice (or womens' choir), flute obligato, strings (string orchestra or string quartet), and harp or piano. In other words, this is intended to minister to the quiet nobility of the true spirit of Christmas, with love and blessings.
