Starting with a brass fanfare, much of the music is heavy, demonstrating the size and weight of the mammoths. Later, a contrasting softer section shows the more gentle side of this mammal. The work closes with thunderous stomping. In the last bars of the piece (49-56) the musicians are encouraged to stomp in the shown rhythm when playing sustained notes (if possible).

His plan was to premiere the piece with his group (he was teaching at Garden City Community College at the time) that next fall. Unfortunately, the strings program was cut at the end of that semester and he never had the chance program the piece. It was premiered in May of 2013 by the Tabor College Symphonic Orchestra under my direction. It was inspired by the painting Twisted Ironies, a beautiful portrayal of a tornado, which was given to the composer as a gift by the artist. The drum set part was added at the suggestion of a string teacher in the community. The piece alternates dramatic lyricism with driving string and percussion statements. There is an optional first violin solo as well as a drum set solo, which will add some flair to you concert!

He wanted a piece from me for his sixth grade orchestra.The piece is in two movements (an excellent introduction to multi movement compositions) with each of the two movements being progressive, meaning the second is a bit more difficult than the first. The first movement, River Song, is an original folk song with beautiful harmonies and melodies. This is a wonderful way to introduce minor key to your ensemble. The second movement, River Dance, is a rhythmic barn dance framing a lyrical chorale section. This movement is in the more comfortable key of B-flat and serves as an excellent introduction to syncopation.

But the solemnity gives way to the merry fiddle tune of abarn dance. A wistful waltz in a minor mode contrasts their hardship and loneliness. The main theme returns a newkey, signifying determination and confidence. The piece ends as it began, with a query expressed by the violins,pondering what the future may hold.

I keep updated on all things astronomical. Though I likely won't live to see it, I greatly look forward to mankind's inevitable exploration of deep space and other galaxies. An aphelion is defined as the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. This phenomenon was the inspiration for this concert piece for two horns and string orchestra (or piano). The work begins starkly, with just the horns playing by themselves before a single string drone enters. This is the light of the sun a long ways away. The piece then takes us on a few adventures as it begins its revolution around the sun. The piece ends warmly as we arrive at perihelion (the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun). Aphelion for two horns and string orchestra was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to the Chech American Horn Duo (Steven Gross and Jiri Havlik) and the Symphony of the Vines, Greg Magie, conductor, who premiered the piece in January of 2018.

These wereChristian songs which described Bible stories (Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho) or about living with the spiritof God (Every Time I Feel the Spirit). Sometimes the spirituals described the hardships of slavery (NobodyKnows the Trouble I've Seen). Most interestingly, some spirituals had hidden meanings. In Swing Low, SweetChariot it appears that the singer is talking about dying and going to heaven, but in actuality, home refers to aplace of freedom, and crossing the river Jordan means overcoming the obstacles to freedom.
