LicariWritten for String Orchestra with Percussion Music Preparation Services www.musicprepservices.com I wrote this piece after listening to the Herbie Mann album Impressions of the Middle East from 1967. I was intrigued with the sounds and styles he was able to blend together for that album. Since my compositions are marketed for school-based ensembles, I wanted to try my hand at creating a piece that had a Middle-Eastern vibe, by using a harmonic minor mode. This piece is written in D-Phrygian Dominant mode (scale degrees are as follows: 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, b7). Look out for low 1, 2, and low 4 fingerings.

Found in several late-16th-century and early 17th-century sources and preserved at the University of Cambridge. Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the tune from as early as 1686. The tune is contained in several of Dowland’s lute manuscripts; in William Ballet’s Lute Book; in Sir John Hawkins’ transcripts of virginal music; in The Dancing Master; The Beggar’s Opera; and in many other books.  The earliest known source of the tune -Trinity College, Dublin ms. D. I.21, c. 1580 - known as William Ballet's lute book- gives the tune in the melodic minor scale.  Greensleeves is also often played in a natural minor scale and in the Dorian Mode.  This arrangement is inspired on the transcripts of virginal music from Sir John Hawkins’. The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. Published by Lost Key Music (A0.829838). Blues Train for string orchestra with percussion introduces the blues scale to young musicians, and each section gets an opportunity to play the blues scale. This is a fun piece that I think young musicians will enjoy.  The percussion parts provide the train sounds. I envisioned this piece as sort of a story in which the train arrives at the station to pick up passengers and then makes stops along the way to pick up additional passengers, represented by the different sections of the orchestra.
