Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by Kenneth Atkins. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. 90 pages. RÄ“sFacta Editions #972651. Published by RÄ“sFacta Editions (A0.1389128).

Gabriel Fauré's Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80, is a suite of incidental music composed in 1898 for Maurice Maeterlinck's play of the same name. Fauré's composition is renowned for its delicate and evocative portrayal of the mysterious and tragic atmosphere of Maeterlinck's symbolist drama.

The suite consists of four movements:

Prélude: The Prelude sets the mood for the entire piece, introducing listeners to the ethereal and melancholic world of Pelléas et Mélisande. Fauré's masterful orchestration creates an otherworldly atmosphere, with shimmering strings, delicate woodwinds, and haunting harmonies.

Fileuse: This movement, often translated as Spinning Song, depicts Mélisande at her spinning wheel. The music captures the hypnotic rhythm of spinning, with gentle, flowing melodies and a sense of introspection.

Sicilienne: The Sicilienne is perhaps the most famous movement of the suite. Its graceful melody, accompanied by a gentle dance-like rhythm, evokes a sense of nostalgia and longing. Fauré's use of the Sicilian rhythm lends the piece a timeless quality, transporting listeners to a world of beauty and sorrow.

Mort de Mélisande: The suite concludes with the Death of Mélisande. This movement is a powerful culmination of the emotional journey depicted throughout the music. Fauré's music reflects the tragic climax of Maeterlinck's play, with poignant melodies and rich harmonies conveying a sense of grief and finality.

Overall, Fauré's Pelléas et Mélisande Op. 80 is a masterpiece of impressionistic music, capturing the emotional depth and beauty of Maeterlinck's timeless tale.

Viola players can feel left out of the fun when they keep getting all the left over notes. All the cool melodies are split between the violins and the cellos while the bass plays moving bass lines but the poor viola, left to the last bits of harmony no one else is using. But in Voila Viola!, the viola is the star! The cheerful melody allows room for the viola to really express itself while being backed by moving harmonies. This piece is great for teaching timing and listening to the other players. Wide ranging eighth notes dominate this piece with emphasis on the viola's changing melodies while the backing harmonies keep the piece with the playfulness of pizzicato.

A dynamic and invigorating cello quintet which builds to a final climax, my ensembles have really enjoyed playing this. Suitable for school and adult ensembles. Parts are of varying levels of difficulty. Cello 5 is a plucked bass part (2 bar loop) utilising first finger and open strings, suitable for a complete beginner. Cello 4 is a two bar quaver loop, allowing the player to sink into a repetitive groove. Cello 3 is more melodic and Cello 2 & 1 require players comfortable in fourth position. Duration: 2:36 Date of Release: 2015 Back to School 2015.

Composed by Simon Franglen. Arranged by Lisa Ochoco. Contemporary,Film/TV. Score and parts. 19 pages. Lisa L Ochoco #776796. Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.1176717).

Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.

From Darkness to Light is a beautiful instrumental piece in the movie that shows off the beauty of the water.  On paper, the music seems a little too simple, but the chord progressions together with the moving parts make for quite a beautiful and memorable piece.

This arrangement is scored for string orchestra - 3 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and double bass.

One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer†comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  The Shimmer part could be played by wind chimes.  Franglen mentioned that they used keys hanging from strings (car keys, house keys, etc) to create this effect among other creative objects-turned-instruments.

Duration: 3.75 minutes.
