Music for beginner and first-year string players with performance in mind. Despite this piece being playable with only open strings and first finger, the backing track makes it sound much more complex and advanced! The following are assumed to be learnt in advance:

 Violin 1 / Viola 1 / Cello 1 / Double Bass: Crotchets (quarter notes), minims (half notes) and dotted minims (dotted half notes), crotchet rests (quarter rests). Open strings and first finger one tone higher on G, D and A strings.

Violin A / Viola A (A for advanced): the above plus second and third fingers making the tone-tone-semitone shape from the open string.

Violoncello A: the above plus all four fingers in first shape. The use of second finger is clearly marked.

 As many or a few parts as required can perform the piece, though the 1 parts have the true melody if used alone. Admittedly the Double Bass part musically interferes with the bass part of the backing track but is added for inclusion purposes.

Sometimes string ensembles find themselves without viola players, meaning a lot of string repertoire gets lost to them. Here is Vivaldi's Sinfonia RV122 rearranged with a Violin 3 part, with the notes redistributed so none of the original is lost. Some bowing markings have been added, and it has been tested by a live ensemble. Viola parts are available online elsewhere for free and are fully compatible with this arrangement. The Swan (Le Cygne) from Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals, arranged for cello and string orchestra. The solo cello part is untouched from the original, and though a part is included here, any edition compatible with the original will fit. The original is of course written for cello plus two pianos, but this new edition opens up more performance possibilities. It was written with a youth ensemble in mind, so the second violin and cello parts are simpler than the first violin and viola parts. Although this may help, it should prove enjoyable for any string orchestra to perform, with either a guest solo cellist or cello leader playing the solo. Score and parts included.

The parts are differentiated so that, for example, third violin is much simpler than first or second, though still integral. There is plenty of divisi which can help spotlight key players. The famous Sugar Plum Fairy dance, here arranged for school string orchestra, although of course it could work for a group of any age. The first and second violin parts require chromatic movement in first position and third violin part is in hand shape no. 1 for newer players. Viola part is probably the most difficult which fitted the players it was originally written for. Cello part is straightforward and there are a couple of moments for double bass. Haydn's (though most probably Hoffstetter's) famous Serenade, in a sound-alike arrangement. Middle parts are slightly redistributed for ease in the third violin part, which is the same as the viola part and can be omitted. Cello and bass parts are alike, so it can also be played by string quartet. There is some careful editing, including indications as to whether the grace notes should be on or before the beat. Written with school groups in mind that might have a few good violins to play the melody. It's tiring for young players to play so much pizzicato, but with one violin part made easier takes much less rehearsal time! However it can be enjoyed by string players of all ages. Welsh Folk Song Suite was written in 2011 for Wrexham Schools String Ensemble, though it is an enjoyable challenge for string groups of any age. The notes are mostly straightforward and the rhythms can be taught and learnt.

The work is conveniently named, though only the inner movements could be described as a folk song. The first is taken from Edward Jones’s 1794 Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards, whilst the fourth is a famous hymn.Three of the movements share a modernist idiom without often straying from their melodic root. In the final movement ideas from the first two movements return. The slow movement, Cadair Idris, however, stands alone, with much more traditional harmonic roots, and is joined structurally by an original melody. Score and parts included.

Though originally arranged with school string orchestra in mind, this arrangement is suitable for string groups of all ages. There is a third violin part as well as viola, though these are not the same. The third violin is designed for beginners whereas the viola part is about equal in ability with the second violins, sometimes doubling the cello part. Score and parts included. Merry Christmas!
