Bach: Nun Komm'der Heiden Heiland - from 3 chorales, P. 167: No. 1. Lento assai, BWV 659 - Orchestral interpretation by Ottorino Respighi.

Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (original: Nu kom der Heyden heyland, English: Savior of the nations, come, literally: Now come, Saviour of the heathen) is a Lutheran chorale of 1524 with words written by Martin Luther, based on Veni redemptor gentium by Ambrose, and a melody, Zahn 1174, based on its plainchant. It was printed in the Erfurt Enchiridion of 1524.

Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland continues to be used in modern settings. It appears in liturgically oriented Christian hymnals, for example the Lutheran Book of Worship, and as the cantus firmus for organ compositions.

The song was the prominent hymn for the first Sunday of Advent for centuries. It was used widely in organ settings by Protestant Baroque composers, most notably Johann Sebastian Bach, who also composed two church cantatas beginning with the hymn. Later settings include works by Ottorino Respighy, Max Reger, Brian Easdale and Siegfried Strohbach.

English versions include Savior of the nations, come by William Morton Reynolds, published in 1851.

Composed by Frederick Frahm. Contemporary,Folk,Holiday,Patriotic. Score and parts. 26 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3020007. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533560).

This is the score of this work. The string parts are available on rental from the publisher.

Composer's note:
On 31 October 1517, Dr. Martin Luther, according to church custom,
posted a document presenting 95 theses intended for scholarly debate
on the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg. As a teacher, theologian,
and a pastor he found much to be concerned with in the conduct of his
mother, the Church. His intent was to begin a conversation over honest
grievances and to persuade those who would lead to take a path more
consistent with the teachings they espoused.
Spaces of Night takes its impetus from this desire to speak truth to power.
It's music, with no small sympathy towards the tonal language and dialect
of the classic American liturgical tradition, is at times parody and at other
times anti-parody. It's libretto, while created 100 years ago by a celebrated
American author, speaks in our present age to an empire that has lost its way.
Its voice is not one of despair and rage,
but hope for and commitment to the future of the gathered community.
If I should cast off this tattered coat,
And go free into the mighty sky;
If I should find nothing there
But a vast blue,
Echoless, ignorant —
What then?
