String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.940136

Composed by Paul Sweet. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 29 pages. Paul Sweet Music #5771341. Published by Paul Sweet Music (A0.940136).

Machinations, a 4 minute concert piece perfect for advanced high school or college level players, opens in a sort of rhythmic and tonal gridlock. Short sequences of notes in each part overlap and struggle to break free from the others, sometimes shifting slightly upward or downward. Slowly, new harmonies and dissonances are created by these shifts, taking the music to a breaking point where a new theme finally pushes through. A more outgoing middle section surges ahead relentlessly, each of the parts working now more as a group than before. Eventually, though, it becomes clear that the gridlock of the beginning must return.

The third and final section seems at first to be a repeat of the opening material, but the appearance of music from the middle section lets the listener know this is not the case. Themes from all over the work soon blend and overlap, growing in intensity until the climax implodes and the work comes to a quiet and uneasy end.

Machinations, by definition, are plots or schemes. I imagined, as I wrote the work, that each instrumental part was scheming about how it would break free from the rigid and meticulous pattern of the opening measures. By the same token, it was clear that some undefined force was plotting ways to keep the music in this form. Imagine these secret plots and maneuvers as you play or conduct the work for maximum effectiveness.

SKU: S9.Q6249

For string orchestra. Composed by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, study score. Op. 254. Duration 8 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6249. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6249).

The Fall of the Leafe is based on a piece for virginal from the Fitzwilliam collection and is characterised by a descriptive descending scale which imitates leaves falling in autumn. The piece has further resonance for Maxwell Davies who lives in Orkney where there are very few trees so his opportunities to experience this time of year are confined to visits elsewhere in the country or his imagination.

SKU: S9.Q19841

For bass clarinet and strings. Composed by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, Study score. Op. 281. Duration 15 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q19841. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19841).

Commissioned by the St Magnus Festival and first performed there in 2007, The Seas of Kirk Swarf, like many of the composer’s works, draws inspiration from the Orkney Isles where Maxwell Davies lives. Kirk Swarf is a stretch of sea off the Holms of Ire, two small uninhabited islands off Sanday, Orkney and as the name suggests, on shore is a ruined chapel. The composer explains that two kinds of sea meet and interact here at this point - the wilder sea from Westray to the west, and a calmer sea, resulting in huge waves suddenly rearing up, even on calm days, with extraordinary dramatic effect.

SKU: S9.Q19666

For string quartet and string orchestra. Composed by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, Study score. Op. 319. Duration 20 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q19666. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19666).

Having previously been granted the diploma of the Bologna Academy in December 2011, Maxwell Davies wrote his Concerto Accademico as both an expression of gratitude to the Regia Academia Filarmonico di Bologna and also in part “a presentation of academic qualification, to justify this singular honourâ€. The work is scored for string quartet and string orchestra and is based on a plainsong chant, heard at the outset, associated with the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples at Pentecost, and their subsequent speaking in tongues.

Shawkemo Dreaming (2009) for string orchestra is dedicated to Robert Moran. The
title refers to Shawkemo, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. This work is
one of a variety of pieces deeply connected to the landscape of Nantucket.
Overlooking the harbor and conservation preserves, Shawkemo imparts a sense of
peace, amidst gentle wind and sky. The work begins with bell-like tolling through
which a freely lyrical melody is unfolded. This melodic material is developed, building
to small climaxes, before the work settles into a reposed conclusion.

Composed by Carson Cooman. Baroque,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 77 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038897. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533701).

Concerto for Portatif Organ and Strings (2006) was commissioned by the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra and its director, Robert Mealy. The work is dedicated to organist Nancy Granert, for whom the solo part was written. The work was commissioned in celebration of the von Clemm Chamber Organ at The Memorial Church, Harvard University, built in 2006 by Klop Organ Builders.

As with many of my works, relationships between old and new musical concepts are explored. In this piece, musical aspects of the Baroque organ concerto tradition (and Baroque style string playing) co-exist with more contemporary musical elements. In particular, the directness of expression found in many Baroque concertante works is present throughout. Musical material is shared between the movements in a motivic fashion.

The title of the first movement, Bricolage, is defined as “something made or put together using whatever materials happen to be available.†  Thus, the musical material for the movement is of varying characters; these elements are assembled together in ways that allow them to comment on and inform each other. Some of these musical elements include: a traditional “overture†texture, a Basse de Trompette texture (with an organ reed stop in the left hand) common in French Baroque organ music, and the French keyboard toccata style.

The second movement, Elegia, is dark and searching in tone. It begins with a rageful roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material – a simple “lament†theme in a folk-inflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this time with a whisper. The movement winds down to a sad conclusion.

After the soul-searching of the second movement, the third movement, Rondeau, is sprightly and energetic. The basic material is a set of Baroque and Classical-style figurations (with a few American gospel inflections thrown in), firmly grounded in G major. After minor diversions, the original material continues to return and ends the work with unfettered joy.
