This arrangement of Haydn's masterpiece from his Missa in Angustiis features the principal players of each section as it alternates between string quartet phrases and the sound of the full string orchestra. It is somewhat reminiscent of a concerto grosso in style, but stays true to the original in key and overall form and is suitable for concert or contest performance. Written for the arranger’s Middle School string orchestra, the arrangement provides an opportunity to feature your more advanced players in a relatively safe way with short group solos while the rest of the orchestra also stays engaged. All of the upper string parts can all be played in first position, with some shifting required of the cellos and basses.

I transcribed Nelson Riddle arrangement on soundtrack by ear.  I transposed it to an easy key for young ensembles and added to the celeste figuration.  The second half is entirely original- a 60's swing style groove.  I tacked on a Peter Gunn influenced finale.  It was put together to honor Henry Mancini's centennial.  The audience loved it.Here's the youtube link to the April 18th performance by tge younger orchestra at Stuyvesant High School where I conduct the orchestra.
