Having previously been granted the diploma of the Bologna Academy in December 2011, Maxwell Davies wrote his Concerto Accademico as both an expression of gratitude to the Regia Academia Filarmonico di Bologna and also in part “a presentation of academic qualification, to justify this singular honour�. The work is scored for string quartet and string orchestra and is based on a plainsong chant, heard at the outset, associated with the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples at Pentecost, and their subsequent speaking in tongues.

Commissioned by the St Magnus Festival and first performed there in 2007, The Seas of Kirk Swarf, like many of the composer’s works, draws inspiration from the Orkney Isles where Maxwell Davies lives. Kirk Swarf is a stretch of sea off the Holms of Ire, two small uninhabited islands off Sanday, Orkney and as the name suggests, on shore is a ruined chapel. The composer explains that two kinds of sea meet and interact here at this point - the wilder sea from Westray to the west, and a calmer sea, resulting in huge waves suddenly rearing up, even on calm days, with extraordinary dramatic effect.

The Fall of the Leafe is based on a piece for virginal from the Fitzwilliam collection and is characterised by a descriptive descending scale which imitates leaves falling in autumn. The piece has further resonance for Maxwell Davies who lives in Orkney where there are very few trees so his opportunities to experience this time of year are confined to visits elsewhere in the country or his imagination.

Max wrote this tiny piece for the small chorus of his St Magnus Festival, with a plain string accompaniment. It works absolutely beautifully and its text (in Latin) reminds us that sometimes we should just enjoy music with a simple heart: ‘Wealth may be yours, wisdom too, and you may have beauty, but if pride touch them, all will turn to dross.’.
