There is quite a lot of divisi in all of the string parts, so at least 6 players per part is preferable, except double basses where 2 players minimum are needed.

Written in 1990, the Concertino For Treble Recorder, Strings And Harp, was requested by recorder player Ruth Whatley. Ruth and I were at the London College of Music together during this time. We worked together to rehearse the piece and eventually it was given a run-through by a group of string players and harpist, Alice Trentham (also at the college with us at the time). It still awaits its premiere! One day I hope I can post up a recording of this beautiful piece.

A friend who attended its “play through� described it as being like “the South American Rain Forests�, which I thought was a beautiful, and very fitting description.

Duration: Approximately 15 minutes

All of the parts are challenging so this is not a piece for junior players.

This festive medley combines three joyful melodies into a cheerful Celtic tapestry. Centering on The Sussex Carol, it also takes the listener on a colorful romp through Good Christian Men, Rejoice, as well as an Irish fiddle tune entitled A Merry Christmas. The work can be performed with strings alone, but the addition of hand drum, guitar, and whistle give a distinctive fiddle band sound without significantly increasing rehearsal preparation. The composer, whose work suits the amateur music-making very much in many respects, succeeded in creating a tonal arrangement that is individual in style. In the first movement, this rhythmically very lively, thematically clearly visible and harmonically interesting though not revolutionary work presents the strings and the solo instruments often entering canonically with an easily remembered -seventh motif; in the second movement, it leads a melody dying away a long time to a dynamic climax, adds harmonic cross relations to a scherzo moving in dance style and closes with a lively vivace movement.“ (Das Liebhaber-orchester).

An arrangement of the Vanuatu (Ni-Vanuatu)National Anthem Yumi, Yumi, Yumi- We, We, We for String Orchestra Vanuatu gained its independence from both the United Kingdom and France in 1980. (I assume that during the colonial period, both anthems were used, however I do not know how they were performed). Upon independence, the anthem Yumi, Yumi, Yumi, written in the native Bislama language (a type of Pigdin English/French hybrid), was chosen as the national anthem. The work of the great French baroque master Marc-Antoine Charpentier gathered dust in the archives for more than 200 years. Not until this century started a renaissance of Charpentier. The boldness of his harmony which is not even afraid of dissonant combinations in the interest of consequent part-writing is amazing for those days. Since the range of an octave plus sixth is not exceeded in the upper parts, even recorders or gambas can be used. Finally, the third part (vi-ola) can be played almost exactly from music by a third violin.
