Muffat, pupil of Lully and Corelli, composed his concerto „Victoria Maesta“ („Sad Victory“) in 1689 as organist and chamber musician in the court of the archbishop of Salzburg. The title refers to the taking of Belgrad during which the archbishop’s brother was killed in 1688; therefore the piece begins with a solemn funeral march in C minor, in elaborate and artistic contrapuntal technique in the sense of Corelli’s adagio type.

Tomás Luis de Victoria, an accomplished singer, organist, and Catholic priest, is an important Spanish composer of the 16th-century Counter-Reformation, alongside other heavyweight names such as the Italian composer, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Victoria’s first book of motets (Motecta I), published in 1572, features Vere languores as the eleventh work. This arrangement has been transposed to a more strings friendly key, and where appropriate, breath marks have been suggested to align with the original text. A worthwhile addition for any concert, programme, or service, especially those in a sacred venue with impressive acoustics, such as a church or cathedral. The Little Bud Car That Could is a story about a train that ran from Victoria to Courtenay on Vancouver Island.  The piece portrays the movement of the train with staccato eighth notes throughout.  There is also a section where the young musician is asked to play col legno  The technique is used to express the sound of the railroad ties.  A great piece for a young orchestra.

Canada.  Research states that many of the buildings in Bastion Square were haunted by previous residents of the buildings in the area.  This composition is a typical march with First Violin parts ascending into third and fifth position.  However, whenever this happens in the part it is double by a lower First Violin part in case the upper part is a little too challenging.  The entire march ends with strains of Rule Brittania which I felt appropriate because Victoria is known in British Columbia, Canada as a little bit of England.

Starry Night for a Ramble was popularized in Victorian London by singer and Shakespearean comic Samuel Bagnall in 1873.  Although an earlier edition from Scotland exists suggesting it was written earlier and perhaps by someone else. Later it was adapted as a popular fiddle tune which is still heard at contra dances today, either as a jig or a waltz.  This arrangement for mandolin orchestra incorporates the salubrious tune as both a waltz and a jig on a meandering ramble through various keys.
