Snowflakes Falling Gently On A Winter's Eve combines an original melody which depicts the falling of snow through the use of staccato eighth notes augmented with grace notes.  Once this melody has been presented the Christmas Carol Silent Night is then displayed by the viola and cello section along with the original melody presented by the violins.  Musicians young and old will enjoy  presenting this composition to their audiences.

Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.

The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring one solo cello passage, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.

This particular piece, Snowy Mountains, is set in the alpine region of Australia, in Thredbo in the state of NSW, which is a popular ski resort. The scene opens with the majesty and austerity of the alpine mountains. Then, the cold sets the teeth chattering and the feet stamping with a paraphrase from Vivaldi's Winter from The Four Seasons but which transforms into the iconic Australian song, Waltzing Matilda. From there, fun is had in the snow followed by the journey up the ski lift to the top of the ski fields. Then, of course, there is the exhilarating ski journey down the mountain! After more fun in the snow, the day ends, everybody tired but happy!

A Teeny Tiny Song composed for orchestra that my students encouraged me to publish.   This was written for a very beginning orchestra utilizing pizzicato for a very soft effect and drums for a very loud effect.  It pictures a child sneaking up on another then pelting them with a snowball.

It teaches dynamics and accents.

When the snow is still disappearing from the land of Russia, pine snowdrops are the first to begin blooming. You can feel the faint brightness of early spring, when winter has not yet completely broken. A sprawling waltz can be heard in the middle section, foreshadowing the coming of spring.

Floating Snowflakes is a wonderful Christmas arrangement which begins with an original Christmas melody, which is then merged with the Christmas carol The First Nowell. This composition is written for young string players who are beginning to experience the joy of playing in an orchestra.  The arrangement includes a third violin part as well as a piano part which can be used for rehearsal or for performance as well.  In addition, the Garth Williams has included the Scale of D Major, plus Rhythm and Melodic Patterns. Instructors can use these as  great warmups to the piece.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!, as performed by Dean Martin, arranged by Tim Crooks for String Orchestra (ABRSM Beginner - grade 6).

Technical challenges include a mixture of straight and swung 8ths, and key change from D major into Eb, meaning the main parts are best suited to ABRSM Grade 4+ standard players. The arrangement can be mostly played in first position, occasionally requiring 3rd and 4th positions.

The arrangement also includes an easy part for Violin & Viola suitable for grade 1-2 level. Parts can be printed multiple times.

A piano part is included but is not needed for performance.

About the arranger

Tim Crooks trained as a violinist and violist, working professionally in Manchester (UK) for many years. He was a founding member of the Manchester String Quartet and scored many arrangements for the group's recordings. Tim now orchestrates and conducts, working with orchestras including Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia.
