Written in 2024, Romance for String Orchestra is unabashedly tonal piece based on music from my compositions Romance for Orchestra (1982) and Pasacalle Triste (2024). Romance for Orchestra was composed as my undergraduate thesis at The Boston Conservatory of Music and has since writhed in obscurity. One understands why, though: various passages sound like juvenilia. Still, others sound a good deal stronger, and it is those passages that I have rescued, and which are featured in Romance for String Orchestra. Newly composed passages bracket and are intertwined with older ones, many of which are here transposed. Though just a smattering when compared to the number of passages borrowed from Romance for Orchestra, the ones borrowed from Pasacalle Triste nonetheless provide a meaningful creative arc manifested in one composition, and they provide just the right touches during various sequential passages. Speaking of sequences, Romance for Orchestra contains what is for my oeuvre the most expansive sequence I have composed to date; in both cases that sequence leads to the formal recapitulation of the main theme in the tonic key C Minor.

A fugue for sting orchestra about 8 minutes long.  A.C.H. were my wife's initials before we were married and correspond to the musical notes A, C, and B which open the subject and govern many of the structural elements of the of the piece.  

When listening to the audio sample the volume may need to be boosted substantially because the fugue begins so softly.

The music of this piece was originally written for chorus and piano. However, the composer was unable to get publishing rights to the text, so he transcribed the choral parts for strings. This work is a lovely study of music written in 5, and not coincidentally employs 5ths as the unifying interval.

This is one of the most important and original pieces in the composer's catalog. It was begun in 2001 and completed from sketches in 2018. The composer began it as an elegy to both his father and to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but since it was completed so much later, he removed that dedication from the performance materials. The mood is nevertheless deeply sad and piercingly poignant. The musical language is 12-tone, but is loaded with minor triads/trichords tinged with dissonances and contextual resolutions, most of which sound like suspended fourths. Duration: 7:00.

One of the more substantial and poignant pieces in the composer's oeuvre, Poem and Lamentations begins with an extended violin solo that serves as the basis for the intensely moving chromatic music that follows. The violin solo stands alone well, and is available separately, and is also available transcribed for viola, or violoncello. Poem and Lamentations is also available in its original version for violin solo with piano accompaniment. Duration: 12:00.

Andean Sunrise in Watercolor was inspired by watching the beautiful sunrise and sunset in Villa de Leyva, Colombia. The work is circular in construction, in that the final bass note could be held and a return to the beginning would start a new day.
